THE USUAL SUSPECTS
VIP Lounge (10/30/16): Shelton Benjamin is back in the co-host chair, as the gang welcomes Colt Cabana. Colt is there ostensibly to talk his new Wrestling Road Diaries 3 documentary as well as being a podcast pioneer, but the show frequently gets sidetracked. Colt and Shelton have an interesting discussion on the benefits of boundaries in wrestling, but the conversation is stilted and too often the jokes don’t land and linger like a bad odor. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Conversation with the Big Guy #10 (10/31/16): Ryback and Pat blast through a litany of topics, including childhood Halloween memories, a crazy date Ryback once had, firing back at Lance Storm, wrestling outside WWE, and developmental Halloween parties. The idea of Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas hosting a Halloween party is delightful, the image of Ryback being discovered, um, servicing a young lady is less so. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

The Steve Austin Show #373 (11/1/16): Kurt Angle is the guest this week, which really feels like a big “get” but isn’t really played up as such. The interview is really divided into two parts: Kurt’s current status (which includes a lot on the UK wrestling scene) and his recent battle with addiction. The latter topic gets really in depth on how his multiple injuries and surgeries lead to his substance abuse problems and the long road he took back to sobriety. Kurt is very open, and while the show is pretty heavy, it’s a compelling listen. THUMBS UP

Killing the Town #3 (11/1/16): Lance and Cyrus break down the Hell in a Cell show (well, Cyrus only watched the actual Cell matches) before they’re joined by Scott D’Amore for the first part of a multi-part series. D’Amore talks about booking and Impact Wrestling, but mostly the episode is about giving each other crap. Not a lot to part 1, so hopefully things pick up next week. Cyrus is still feuding with Disco Inferno, for those keeping track of such things. [D’Amore’s interview starts at 31:06] THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

MLW Radio #251 (11/1/16): Court and MSL run down the Hell in a Cell PPV, and then welcome the newest MLW host Eric Bischoff joins them in the third chair. Easy E talks about former WCW stalwarts Sting and Bill Goldberg returning to the WWE and if the brand still has any steam, as well as the state of TNA and what it’s like pitching WCW to Turner executives. It’s an OK show, although Eric is never as interesting a host as you’d think. The rotating third chair is a good way to freshen up the shows. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

The Ross Report #142 (11/1/16): Hillbilly Jim and Dalton Castle are the guests this week, although sadly not together. After JR opines on Hell in a Cell, he’s joined by Hillbilly Jim for a brief but jovial interview where he talks about breaking into the business and how happy he was to be a part of it. Then Dalton Castle hops on to talk about his gimmick, influences, possibly going to the WWE, and more. I didn’t think it was possible to make a Dalton Castle interview boring, but there you go. JR also asks Dalton if he thinks he’s a heel? [Hillbilly Jim’s interview starts at 22:28, Castle’s interview starts at 37:01] THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Talk is Jericho #296 (11/2/16): Our second straight show with members of Avenged Sevenfold, as this time it’s M. Shadows and Johnny Christ. They talk some more about their new album and also life on the road, from playing the Warped Tour to stadium shows with Metallica. Amazingly, they somehow manage to make tour stories boring, as really there’s nothing here unless you’re an A7X diehard. [A7X’s interview starts at 4:31] THUMBS DOWN

Bischoff on Wrestling #14 (11/2/16): Big news, as Eric has joined the MLW Network, although virtually nothing has changed. For the first show, Colt Cabana talks to Eric and Nick about his new documentary, comedy in wrestling, and the burgeoning independent scene. This sounded like a trainwreck when it popped up, but Colt works well here, and there is some common ground with Bischoff venturing out into both independent wrestling and podcasting. [Cabana’s interview starts at 32:44] THUMBS UP

Ric Flair Show #17 (11/2/16): Ric and Conrad welcome former WCW and WWE personality Torrie Wilson to talk about getting into the wrestling business, having heat with Sable, dating A-Rod, and her new fitness app. Flair’s somewhat creepy bringing up A-Rod and apparently sending Torrie pictures of his Lil’ Naitch, which makes the show uncomfortable at times. [Wilson’s interview starts at 14:32] THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Art of Wrestling #323 (11/3/16): In an effort to further promote Wrestling Road Diaries 3, Colt brings on Santino Marella, although their discussion on comedy in wrestling is fairly brief. We do get a discussion on Santino wrestling in Japan (with a triumphant story of buying bleach), going to developmental, and his new training school. Maybe not what Colt envisioned, but the story of having a posedown with Cody Rhodes at the post-WrestleMania party makes it worth it. THUMBS UP

The Steve Austin Show – Unleashed! #374 (11/3/16): Ted Fowler. “You wanted it, you got it!” says the show description. Who? Who wanted it? Steve and Ted talk hunting and drinking. It goes for over a hundred minutes. Nope. THUMBS DOWN

Jim Cornette Experience #152 (11/3/16): No guest yet again, as Jim and Brian instead return to two of Jim’s favorite topics: the state of TNA and the presidential election (there’s a bit about Goldberg’s return, to be fair). You know the deal – Dixie is a bad business person and Trump is a dope. Entertaining at points but nothing we haven’t already heard a dozen times. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Keepin’ it 100 #18 (11/3/16): We get a parade of short UFC interviews featuring Diego Sanchez, Tony Ferguson (with some rough audio), Ricardo Lamas (also crappy audio), and Eric Perez. Not a fan of those, as the show works best when it’s a cavalcade of different guests, not a bunch of samey MMA interviews back to back. The parts where Konnan, Disco, and KG talk Hell in a Cell, Raw, football, and politics are much better. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Talk is Jericho #297 (11/4/16): Rock legend Alice Cooper makes his TiJ debut. He and Chris talk about the origins of the shock rock gimmicks, still touring at 68, being pals with Johnny Depp and Paul McCartney, appearing at WrestleMania III, running for President, and more. Sadly nothing on Cooper’s role in Wayne’s World. Looking at everything discussed, the topics probably aren’t the ones you’d choose if you were constructing a perfect Alice Cooper interview, but he’s a talented storyteller and this is a fun show. [Cooper’s’ interview starts at 12:02] THUMBS UP

MSL & Sullivan Show (11/4/16): The usual monologues open the show, this time on wrestling in hot buildings and the handling of the return of Goldberg. No Nitro review this week, as instead we head to an extra-sized mailbag, including Sullivan’s thoughts on working with Mr. T. OK episode, but after the Starrcade review I was looking forward to returning to Nitro. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Something to Wrestle With #14 (11/4/16): Survivor Series 1990 won the poll this week, so you hear about the Ultimate Match of Survival, the Gobbledy ****er (savaged to a satisfying degree), and of course a lot of time is dedicated to the debut of the Undertaker. But the little tidbits, like who chose the buildings to run and all the lineup changes to the show, once again really make the show. I have a soft spot for SurSer ’90, so newer fans may not find it as interesting as past topics. THUMBS UP

Why havent they put anything on the line for Survivor Series men's match? Can they try to make it interesting?

I'm excited for Styles vs Ambrose TLC.
