The pendulum stuff is weird, I only know what it is because of YGoPro but its so easy to cheese with pendulum cards.

Can't wait to recreate my Yang Zing deck

I recommend getting YGoPro and experimenting with deck builds though.

Pendulum monsters aren't a requirement, you build your deck however you want. I def recommend trying out pendulum once you have the right cards to build a solid practice deck though.
