Whenever there's a penalty shootout, I wish that somehow both teams could lose.
But in this case, the better team won. Germany played better, had more chances and Italy were bailed out by a stupid brain fart from Boateng.
The Germans also looked like they wanted to win in extra time whereas Italy were going for the penalty shootout. Chiellini switching balls during a throw in to buy himself a precious 3 seconds. And then faking an injury later to prolong the substitution time.
This was the real final and the Germans will take it all. They will murder whoever gets to the final from that horrible cakewalk side of the bracket. They will win the final 3 or 4-0. The only worry is that they will be missing some players against France due to yellow cards and injuries. Hummels missing will hurt them.
But even if they don't win, this tournament has been a success for the Germans because they finally beat Italy in a tournament. This was always brought up whenever you called Germany the greatest team in history, which they are: The fact that Italy always "owned their souls" in tournaments or whatever. But now they broke that curse. Their consistency throughout tournament history, both World and Euro cups is to be admired.
It's also worth remembering that the two World Cups they missed in 1930 and 1950 weren't because they didn't qualify. In 1930 all they had to do is accept the invitation to qualify whereas in 1950 they were banned because of the war.
