Americans tend to forget about our musical legends moreso than the folks in europe and the uk in particular.

The more I think about it.. Simmons plays like Boris Diaw with a green light and a starting position. In Diaw later years he got more time in the post where he flourished with minimum playing time
I’m thinking GMs saw Diaw and Green, salivated over what Simmons could become.. maybe a Magic type player.. except in this era Magic needs a 3pt jumper
