^Jay isn't a good example to use for that argument, as he's sold a massive amount of records for a very lengthy amount of time, in edition to his business ventures. We're not talking about an out of the limelight rapper with one platinum album 10+ years ago

Where did I say he had an ok career? I said based on his success, his album sales are decent. I already said he's #1 overall.

Well, since we're discussing it, it's quite obvious that Jay's business opportunities were birthed by his success and acclaim as a legendary musical artist. Those business ventures were predicated off of his musical success. He doesn't get 1/2 of he deals he has made if he's not Jay. The correlation should be pretty obvious to be honest.

I said it already, rap opened a lot of those ventures for him, but he aint solely eating off rap, that real money came from the other endeavors. Once you start dipping into the legalities of album sales & percentages and budgets, sales arent a focal point of any artists trying to really profit. Tour money, endorsement money are the real cash cows. Music itself keeps you relevant enough to be able to get those deals. But album sales dont equate to a lot, especially when most if not all major music is accesible for $10/month these days.

Obviously the accolades are always a plus, but any artist would be dumb to think album sales gonna keep them rich.

Jay sold 1mil copies of MCHG to Samsung @ $5 a copy, thats $5mill right off the bat. You can bet he's seeing a bigger percentage of that than he would with hard copies.

Because no matter how anyone wants to slice it, spin it, rationalize it...at it's apex, Hip-Hop is BLACK music. It is a culture that all can partake in and identify with, but we are the GODS of it. We are the alchemists of it. For most of us, we were born into it.

So yes, it does raise an eyebrow when 90% of the "tastemakers" handpicked by these mass-media backed entities like FADER and Complex aren't black.

It's way more than music and it's not about knowledge, it's about grasp of the culture. Hip hop is the only culture I see that is co opted in this way.

Having music knowledge is all good but when these weirdo hipster dudes and old *** white guys are what dictates OUR culture, something ain't right.

And it's been this way for a while. You can see the turn if you look close enough. Rappers been speaking out against this since I was a kid.

I think it's common sense that hip hop culture is BLACK culture that has grown and evolved to include EVERYONE...just as it should. But if you have publications based on the HipHop culture, for less than 20% of the contributors to be black...that is a gross misrepresentation of the "culture" that some claim these publications are EXPERTS of.
