Whispers: Recruiting rumblings from Florida
Mike Farrell
Rivals.com Football Recruiting
Friday Night Lights has come and gone with a few commitments. Not all of them, however, went to the Florida Gators.
Between FNL and the ESPN Champion Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 Tournament, Florida was the place to be for recruiting whispers.
| |
| |
Florida found room for Neiron Ball after an impressive performance at Friday Night Lights.
Running back
Mack Brown was not expected to commit to Florida on his visit to FNL, at least not before he arrived on campus. Once he got to Gainesville and started to talk to the coaches and take in the atmosphere, however, Brown decided to pull the trigger on the field at the end of the night. But will it stick?
While quarterback
Trey Burton has been working Brown hard for Florida, Brown's friends
Alec Ogletree,
T.J. Stripling and
Kendrun Malcome, all Georgia commitments, will continue to work him. An official visit to Athens isn't out of the question for Brown. In the end it appears that Brown will stay with the Gators, but the Dawgs will not give up easily on him.
The other commitment that came out of FNL was a bit of a surprise. Jackson, Ga., defensive end
Neiron Ball wasn't that high on the UF board before arriving at FNL. But after running two 4.48-second 40-yard dashes during the testing portion of the night and showing excellent footwork during drills, Ball shot up the list.
By taking Ball, Florida doesn't have room right now for defensive end/tackle
Dominique Easley, who wanted to commit at FNL as well. Easley wants to get away from home and loves the SEC, so Tennessee could end up being his choice. Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan and others, however, are also very much in the mix.
Georgia wide receiver
Markeith Ambles committed to Tennessee just days after working out at FNL. Florida was Ambles' favorite for quite some time, but it appears that the Gators are waiting for others at wide receiver.
Solomon Patton and
Stephen Alli are already committed,
James Louis will be committed as soon as he can get to Gainesville and meet with coach
Urban Meyer and
Chris Dunkley is the loudest silent commitment of the year. Others Florida could be holding out for include
Kadron Boone,
Quinton Dunbar,
Christian Green,
Ivan McCartney or
Kenny Stills.
Finally, cornerback
Victor Hampton made his visit to Florida. The cornerback, who committed months ago without visiting Gainesville and without meeting Meyer and the coaching staff, made the trip and met with everyone. For now, Hampton is still part of the 2010 class for the Gators. He'll have to get his grades up and keep out of trouble, however, to remain that way. Hampton is still looking to attend Darlington High School in South Carolina for his senior year after being kicked off the Charlotte (N.C.) Independence football team by legendary coach
Tommy Knotts.
Gridiron Rumblings
The ESPN Champion Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 Tournament took place outside of Orlando, Fla., last Friday and Saturday, and there were numerous three-star and four-star prospects who have yet to make a commitment. Here's a bit of what I learned while at the event.
| |
| |
Ivan McCartney has some ties to the Mountaineers.
I mentioned it last week and confirmed it this past weekend - four-star linebacker
Christian Jones and four-star wide receiver
Kenny Shaw are all but signed, sealed and delivered to Florida State. Jones, from Winter Park (Fla.) Lake Howell, is also considering Florida, USC, Oklahoma and others. However, Florida State - where his father and brother played - is way out in front. The same can be said for Shaw from Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips. The Seminoles are way ahead of Florida and others for his services. He said it would be tough for a team to beat out Florida State for his signature.
Florida State, Florida and Georgia are the three leaders for Tampa (Fla.) Catholic athlete
Christian Green, but watch out for the Seminoles here as well. Green was not seen at Florida's Friday Night Lights, although he was in Gainesville earlier in the week, and FSU seems to still be the team to beat. Georgia has been thrown into the mix by Green, but this is a Gators-Seminoles battle unless a shocker occurs.
Miramar, Fla., wide receiver
Ivan McCartney claims to still be wide open in his recruitment, but West Virginia has to be considered a major contender since two of his former teammates play for the Mountaineers. McCartney said he has already visited Morgantown and said he really liked it and that his former teammates are pushing for him to attend WVU.
Kadron Boone, a four-star wide receiver from Ocala (Fla.) Trinity Catholic, is seriously considering Texas Tech but denied rumors he committed to the Red Raiders. Watch out for
Mike Leach's team, though, because Boone seems enamored with playing in the spread offense and is now leaning much more toward Texas Tech than Florida, according to sources. Boone has been hearing rumors that the Gators might already be done at wide receiver (see above). He could not confirm that Florida is finished at that position, but it's something that could concern him.
Dior Mathis said Oregon is still his leader, followed by Michigan State and Miami. Michigan is nowhere to be found among his top schools. The Detroit Cass Tech cornerback planned to announce his college decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but he might decide to move it up to September. Once again, there's no idea if he's playing the same game that
William Campbell played last year when he committed to Michigan, de-committed, eliminated the Wolverines and then committed to
Rich Rodriguez.
Latwan Anderson, one of the best players at Gridiron Kings, seems locked in to West Virginia with Michigan State, Georgia, Miami and North Carolina rounding out his top five. The Mountaineers are still the team to beat.
Wide receiver
Kenny Stills wants to play at USC but could be hesitant to commit to the Trojans because of so much depth at his position. If that's the case, watch for Oklahoma to make a serious push for him. Florida, Penn State, LSU and Tennessee are some others involved as well.
USC has been a longtime favorite, but Washington is a school mentioned more with
Demetrius Wright, a four-star cornerback from Corona, Calif. The Trojans should still be in good shape with him, but the Huskies are making inroads.

Is Toney Hurd Jr. Big 12 bound?
Three-star cornerback
Toney Hurd, Jr. from Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall likes Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and Texas A&M, and many people believe he's going to stay in the Big 12.
New Orleans Edna Karr dual-threat quarterback
Munchie Legaux said Oregon and Tennessee are showing a lot of interest along with Michigan, but Baylor could be the team to beat for his services. The Bears have long been considered a favorite, and he was being worked by Baylor commitments
Ahmad Dixon and
Tyler Stephenson during the two days.
Corona, Calif., running back
Jordon James has four officials set to Arizona, Florida, Notre Dame and UCLA, and he is still considering Washington and Tennessee for a fifth trip. James said he's in no rush to make a commitment. Notre Dame has been linked as his leader, but that didn't seem to be the case at the event. Watch out for UCLA here.
Palmdale, Calif., cornerback
Joshua Shaw would choose between Ohio State and USC if he had to sign today, but he's still interested in Notre Dame, LSU and Oklahoma as well. He has officials set with the Irish and Buckeyes.
Hillside (Ill.) Proviso West wide receiver
Kyle Prater has Illinois and Oklahoma on top and knows he will take official visits to see the Sooners as well as USC. Alabama, Tennessee and Notre Dame are also in the mix near the upper half of his list. Prater will take an unofficial visit to Tennessee on Aug. 1.
Princeton (N.J.) Hun School defensive end
Chris Martin, a Notre Dame commitment, said he has a few schools in mind to visit as a backup plan in case something happens in South Bend to
Charlie Weis and his staff. North Carolina, LSU, Florida and Tennessee are his four backups at this point, although neither the Gators nor the Vols have sent written offers because Martin is so solidly committed. Martin stressed that he would only take other visits if a coaching change was made at Notre Dame.
Thibodaux, La., wide receiver
Trovon Reed admitted he's getting closer and closer to a decision. When cornerback
DeMarcus Milliner was giving the "Roll Tide" signal to some of the Gators commitments who were doing the "Gator Chomp," Reed quietly held up his fingers in the form and an "L". When asked about it he said it was for the state of Louisiana, but others said it was for LSU. The Bayou Bengals are still the leader ahead of LSU, Auburn, Oregon, Missouri and others.
Virginia linebacker
Aramide Olaniyan is still committed to Duke, but he will try to take all five of his official visits. He already has one set with UCLA for the weekend of Nov. 20, when the Bruins play host to Arizona State. He also wants to visit Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Michigan and Duke.
Olney (Md.) Good Counsel cornerback
Louis Young said he is solid to Stanford, but he might still take a trip to Virginia Tech to check out the Hokies.
Florida and Oklahoma are listed at high interest on the profile of Shawnee (Kan.) Bishop Miege athlete
Justin McCay, but don't count out Kansas State or Missouri.
Fort Worth (Texas) Dunbar five-star wide receiver
Darius White confirmed that Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and USC are on his short list but aren't the only three. White said he is very wide open and only knows of one official visit he'll take for sure - USC. Many of his teammates, however, joked with him about being an Oklahoma lock.
Georgia In On Crisp?
| |
| |
Robert Crisp is changing high schools.
A couple of sources said that Rivals100 offensive tackle
Robert Crisp might take a long look at Georgia if his teammate, best friend and fellow NC State commitment
Peter Singer is dropped by the Wolfpack following the latter being charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a handgun by a minor and simple possession of marijuana back on June 16. All signs, however, point to Crisp being solid to the Wolfpack at this point. NC State is sticking by Singer, and it has been confirmed that Georgia has not been in contact.
Singer's parents are the guardians and parental figures of Crisp, which is why many feel that Singer and Crisp are a package deal. Both Crisp and Singer are transferring from Chapel Hill (N.C.) High School to Hillsborough (N.C.) Cedar Ridge.
All In The Family?
The early leader for 2011 San Antonio (Texas) James Madison running back
Aaron Green has to be Nebraska, according to whispers out of that area. Green has early offers from the Huskers, Georgia, USC, Oklahoma and others and is expected to get an offer from Texas following National Signing Day next year, so this would end up being a huge pull for Nebraska if it can stay on top. His brother is 2009 NU signee
Andrew Green.
The only other back offered so far by Nebraska for 2011 is Overland Park (Kan.) St. Thomas Aquinas standout
Dagan Reed, who is brother of current Husker
Kyler Reed.
And finally, Nebraska could also be the team to beat for offensive tackle
Tyler Moore from Florida. Moore is the son of
Brian Moore and the cousin of
Jay Moore, both former Nebraska players.
Etc.
• Wide receivers
Mike Davis from Texas and
Justin Hunter from Virginia, both LSU commitments, are looking around a bit. Davis is looking at Cal with great interest as well as Texas A&M. Hunter is looking at Tennessee and is still being heavily recruited by Virginia Tech, West Virginia and others. Cal could actually be the current leader for Davis, according to sources, while it appears that Tennessee would be the only school with a serious chance at swaying Hunter away from LSU. This could be the reason why LSU is taking a very long look at Dothan (Ala.) Northview wide receiver
B.J. Chitty, who was a standout at camp.

Cincinnati is making a move on Matt James.
• The Cincinnati Bearcats are moving in on Ohio offensive lineman
Matt James in a big way and could be the leader for the four-star tackle. Losing James would be a huge blow to Notre Dame as the Irish decided against offering other tackles like
Andrew Donnal, who might have jumped on the offer. If Notre Dame strikes out on James after having lost out on
James Hurst to North Carolina and having seemingly fallen out of the
Seantrel Henderson sweepstakes, the Irish could end up whiffing altogether on four- or five-star tackles this year.
• Pennsylvania safety
Chad Hagan is expected to commit to Ohio State within the next couple of weeks.
•
Gabriel Wright, a defensive tackle in the Class of 2011, now favors Auburn, followed by Clemson, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee. His teammate
Isaiah Crowell favors Florida, Texas, USC and Georgia. Both players feel that the current ban on Georgia by coach
Dell McGee will eventually blow over, although both said they are down on Georgia based on the Dawgs pulling the offer of their quarterback,
Devin Burns. But like I said last week, look for Georgia to once again be in the mix for both before all is said and done.
• Rivals100 linebacker
LaDarius Owens was expected to announce his decision this week and almost set a news conference for Friday, but he has decided to delay his decision. Owens was expected to choose between Auburn and Alabama this week, but now it appears LSU, Tennessee and Florida State have a chance to get back in this race.
• Pennsylvania athlete
Corey Brown has set an official visit to Ohio State for the weekend of Sept. 12, when the Buckeyes host USC. Ohio State has emerged as the leader for the Rivals100 star.
