OSU still embarrased by bowl game

July 27, 2009 6:02 PM

IRVING, Texas -- Watching the video of the Holiday Bowl isn't a very pleasant for Oklahoma State linebacker Andre Sexton or many of his teammates.

The Cowboys still cringe when they watch Oregon charge through them in the second half to claim a 42-31 comeback victory, ripping though their defense for 307 rushing yards and 7.7 yards per carry as the Ducks charged back from a 10-point halftime deficit.

"It really was embarrasing," Oklahoma State linebacker Andre Sexton said. "It really was embarrasing because that quarterback (Oregon's Jeremiah Masoli) made our players look like they had never made a tackle before. That was pretty sad."

But that disappointment helped spur a tougher attitude for the Cowboys all spring. Sexton said that late collapse has spurred them throughout their workouts.

"You get back to the fundamentals of tackling," Sexton said. "You've got to take away what you can and continue to grow and get motivated for the next season. It's been emphasized every day during spring ball. We've gotten back to smash-mouth football -- the roots of good hard-nosed football."

OSU coach Mike Gundy said that having another team dominate his team late in the game brought a significant attitude change for his team.

"What happened to us against Oregon is they hit harder than we did and were tougher than we were in the fourth quarter," Gundy said. "Up front they beat us on both sides of the ball. As a staff we were very disappointed in ourselves in our preparation. And our players were disappointed they outhit us in the fourth quarter."

That game has sparked a point of emphasis for the Cowboys over the last several months.

"I was a quarterback, but I always played with Pat Jones," Gundy said. "Toughness and discipline and structure and being hard-nosed is important to me. That's not been an issue of us being outhit most times. We've been a tough football team, but we weren't in that football game."

OneOSU player who Gundy can't fault in that game was OSU quarterback Zac Robinson, whosustained a separated shoulder early in the thirdquarter but remained in the game.

"I threw about 50 in the game and probably 20 of them came after the injury," Robinson said. "It hurt every time and I had no arm strength. My arm was done after that. I could throw it 35 yards, but it didn't have much zip on it."

Despite the injury, Robinsonwas determined to remain in the game and was there until the end as he threw a career-high 50 passes.

"I just kept struggling through it and telling them I was fine," Robinson said, chuckling.

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas High School 4-star RB Giovanni Bernard has a different approach from many of your modern-day recruits.

For one thing, he's in no rush to narrow things down to a top three or top five.

He's looked into all the schools that have offered him in-depth and has found nine that match what he is looking for in a college: Miami, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Oregon State.

"They all have somewhat the same type of running style, the coaches are all great and they really try to make you feel at home," Bernard says.

Bernard isn't drawn into the whole who-do-you-like-lately game that many recruits fall into.

"You know, I'll get off the phone with (Miami coach Jeff) Stoutland and be like `Wow, they really made me feel at home, that's my top school,'" Bernard said. "But then I'll take to other coaches the next two weeks and they'll make me feel at home. So I'll take the visits, try to get to know the places I want to go."

And unlike other highly regarded recruits, Bernard doesn't plan to make a big headline splash with his announcement. There likely will be no press conference and he says there definitely won't be a situation where he plays what recruitniks call "the hat game."

"I'm not a put-this-hat-on, take-this-hat-off press conference guy," he says. "I'm a shy kid and I don't want people staring me down. I'll do closed door."

Bernard is humble, something you don't find in too many four- or five-star high school players nowadays.

When is the last time you heard a recruit say "I'm just thankful that I have these schools I can choose out of to go to"? Yes, those are Bernard's words.

Some more of his words: "I'm trying to work hard for the season, for school and just let recruiting take care of itself."

Too many recruits nowadays seem to think they can manipulate the recruiting process by making a commitment and then put a percentage on it - as in "I'll take visits, and I'm 80 percent committed."

That is what fans now call "playing the recruiting game."

It's almost become accepted instead of what it should be: Not a commitment.

But there is no game when it comes to this refreshingly honest and well-spoken 5-foot-9, 198-pound bulldozer of a back.

"I'm not going to decide until after my season - I just need time to visit all the schools," he says. "Then I'll talk it over with my family and decide."

That's it.

Simple.

Memo to Bryce Brown et al: It really should be that easy.

You shouldn't need to fast.

You shouldn't need to commit to more than one school.

Do your homework, visit the schools, talk to your loved one, make your decision.

And how many other four-star recruits out there would be happy that their coach has withheld his recruiting mail?

Well, Bernard is.

Aquinas coach George Smith, a long-time coach with what some might consider old-time values, doesn't hand recruiting mail to his players until the end of their junior years.

Bernard had been getting letters sent to the school since his freshman year, since colleges didn't have his home address.

"Coach Smith hadn't mentioned any mail till the day he gave it to us," Bernard said. "He handed me these boxes of mail - I was overwhelmed at that moment. A lot of them were years old.

"Coach Smith doesn't like us to get all the mail too early - it keeps our head on (straight). And you don't want to be too cocky."

Looks like UM got a committment from a QB.

Provides depth and isn't good enough to scare off Teddy B.

Oh, and Telvin Smith.

Welcome to Tallahassee

Have you ever talked to Tebow in a social setting?
If you have, you'd know it's no act.

Jacory looks like the kids in the commercial you can feed for a quarter a day. He's got a long way to go to become a good QB let alone a Heisman winner.

The Miami Hurricanes may be on the verge of a big surprise the week before the start of training camp.

Four-star cornerback Darrell Givens, a Penn State signee who had visited Miami unofficially more than a year ago, has been denied admission at Penn State and is focused on attending either Miami or Florida.

Sources in Maryland, where Givens was a top-tier recruit at Indian Head High, have told CaneSport that Givens and his high school coach, Doug Lamb, have begun the process of seeing if he can become a Hurricane or a Gator by sending Givens' academic records to both schools. A decision could come as soon as Friday or Saturday once officials at both schools have a chance to review Givens' grades and test scores. Lamb said that neither he nor Givens will comment further on the process until a decision is made.

Givens declined Penn State's request that he attend prep school this fall, a practice common for signees who don't make the grade in time to enroll in August. Miami recruit Malcolm Bunche is taking the prep school approach this fall barring a sudden change in his admissions status in hope of qualifying by December.

"I could just go to any other school and get accepted into the school and not have to sit out this year," Givens told Blue and White Illustrated. "I don't want to sit out, so I'm just going to go to another school. I think I've accumulated 15 offers just today, since this morning. A lot of schools are showing me interest, but I'm not sure where I'm going to go yet. I'm going to make my decision on Saturday."

Givens quickly formulated a list from which he will choose.

"My final eight are Miami, Florida, Rutgers, North Carolina, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Nebraska and South Carolina," he said. "I don't even have a clue right now. Everything is so sudden, everything is just popping up so fast. I have to make a decision quick, some schools start camp next week, some start the following week, but I have to tell the schools that start camp this week so I could leave Monday or Tuesday."

Givens committed to Penn State last May after decommitting from Ohio State shortly before. He was among the most vocal members of the Nittany Lions Class of 2009. Before deciding, he had well over 20 scholarship offers.

He finished the year ranked as the No. 29 cornerback in the country by Rivals.com, and the No. 249 player in the Rivals250. He was also an Under Armor All-American and a participant in the Maryland Crab Bowl.
