Talk about it in
Football Recruiting Board
With Signing Day only hours away, more stories are waiting to be written. A few late day surprises might add to the final chapter of this recruitingseason, but there have been many other monumental stories that have already played out. Yesterday, we looked at #'s 6-10 of the top recruiting stories ofthe year. Here's our final five.
5. Future Corners
Rutgers received a significant boost to its secondary this year when
Abdul Smith and
Logan Ryan both decided to play their college ball in Piscataway. Each isa solid cover corner who is capable of coming in and contributing right away. Smith claimed 23 offers at the time of his verbal while Ryan, a four starprospect, also had an offer list that climbed into double digits.
These commitments were very meaningful in that Smith and Ryan could become the cornerstones of the secondary for quite some time. Rutgers hasn't had a yearwhen it recruited two corners of this caliber in quite a while, perhaps even in its history. Big East teams should get used to these two names as Smith andRyan are likely to have very bright futures ahead of them.
Adding more excitement to the class was the commitment of "athlete"
Quron Pratt, who will get a look at both corner and receiver.
4. The late commits
Every recruiting season, there is always an eagerness leading up to Signing Day regarding who will fill out the current class. This season, Hackensack's
Junior Solice was the first player to commit during the weekleading up to Signing Day. In the morning, the scarlet nation might receive a few more surprises with perhaps a few last minute additions to the class of 2009.
And in the ongoing
Justin Brown saga, where he will wind up stillremains a mystery. Brown, one of the most sought after recruits on the East coast, Brown still teetering between Penn State and Rutgers. A late commitment byBrown to Rutgers would unquestionably make the late commits one of the most gripping stories of this recruiting season.
Three other players to watch are
Malcolm Bush,
Isaac Holmes and
Andrew Opoku. Bush, a one-time commitment to the program, took an officialvisit this weekend and appears to be favoring the Scarlet Knights. Holmes has not publicly stated his decision, though his coach has suggested that he willsign with Rutgers in the morning. After a few semesters on the honor roll, Opoku appears to be on-track to qualify and, therefore, should have an offer in hishand. He is expected to accept that offer.
3. The de-commits
With so many early commitments, it was almost inevitable that Rutgers would lose a few of those prospects. A slow start to the season might have affected a fewplayers' decisions, but some others changed their minds before the season even started. Mark Brazinski and Desmond Scott fell into that category whilerecruits such as Gerald Hodges, Jordan Hill, Malcolm Bunche, Shawney Kersey and Malcolm Bush all followed shortly thereafter.
Bush may fall out of this category with a familiar declaration on Signing Day, making him the lone decommit to recommit. The constant threat of decommitmentloomed like a dark shadow throughout this entire season. However, it has been the same at most other schools across the country. It is a trend that is becomingmore popular each recruiting season.
2. The wave of summer commits
The months of June and July were busy ones for the Scarlet Knights as verbal commitments seemed to come one after the other. The wave of commits left verylittle room in the class of 2009 by the time training camp rolled around. Rutgers had received as many as twenty verbals by August. Of course, some of thosecommitments were not honored and players opted to go elsewhere.
Nevertheless, there almost seemed to be a sense of urgency among prospects during that period. One after the other, players continued to commit to Rutgers asif there was a sense of fear that no scholarships would be left to dole out. The months of June and July were exciting times as verbal commitments kept oncoming.
1. The Savage commitment
Tom Savage might currently be the most highly touted recruit in school history. Savage is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and had schools from allover the country pleading for his services. But Savage's commitment meant more than just a bright future at the quarterback position. As soon as he pledgeshis services to Rutgers, he became a major factor on the recruiting circuit.
Although the Rutgers staff did an excellent job recruiting, the commitment of Savage seemed to springboard the entire class. Just about every time a playercommitted, he mentioned Savage. By adding some star power and an outspoken advocate to the program, Savage has already proven to be very instrumental inRutgers' future without ever playing a single down.
