2012 Summer Olympics Thread: London July 27 - August 12

happy for gabbys coach then for gabby... he was the coach for shawn johnson and she got robbed... so it was redemption imo... good win for the US nonetheless :hat

Tengo, the one older male coach was too touchy for my taste with Aly Raisman during team qualification. Even kissed Aly's forehead when Team USA found out she qualified second to participate in the women's individual all-around competition.

Man, anyone else feel like they can't get into the women's all-around as much without Jordyn Wieber participating? Tough break with the two-per country rule, even more heartbreaking to not qualify based on minuscule flaws throughout her program. Would have loved to see Jordyn battle the Russians for gold (Victoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina).

Wieber Fever!

Kohei Uchimura is a beast though, talk about dominant. Leyva's stepfather was getting hyped enough for the entire crowd.

I suppose it's especially natural for the American media and public to be overly suspicious about alleged PED use. Ye Shiwen's London performances (double gold) are stunning and perhaps curious but let's keep perspective. She's 16-years old. Ye Shiwen knocked off five seconds from her IM time. I believe Phelps shaved four seconds from age 14 to 15 in butterfly. So history would support the notion that it could be done naturally. I really hope this isn't just a case of sour grapes leading to a witch hunt of sorts. The court of public opinion can be harsh regardless of the actual outcome.
I really expected a breakout Olympics for Ryan Lochte, fully believed he would outshine Michael Phelps but Lochte's confidence wasn't quite the same after Yannick Agnel walked him down in the last leg of the 4x100 free relay. I don't want to spoil the results for those waiting to watch the prime time replay tonight but it would seem fatigue plays a part for Lochte Monster. Swimming two finals in a matter of twenty minutes: 200 back and 200 IM. Similar to Missy Franklin's program. It appears the hype and limelight got to Lochte's head, his focus, and wavering from the original, basic goal (win as many golds as possible).
For major swimming fans: The 2012 Games have shown how difficult it is to dominate any given swimming event over multiple Olympics. Phelps, Lochte, Kitajima, Stephy Rice, etc.
my issue is not that she dropped 5 seconds on her time

my issue is that her final 100 in the 400 IM (58.68) was .03 slower than ryan lochte's final 100 (58.65) in the men's event.. that her final 50 (28.93)  was FASTER than lochte's (29.10)

lochte beat the fastest men in the world in that event by 3.68 seconds.. was the 4th fastest guy in the 200 free.. swam a 47 high on his leg of the 4 x 100 free relay.. 3rd fastest in the 200 back.. swam a 52 something in the 100 fly (US trials)

As the only other avid swimming fan (seemingly), Olympics or not, I knew you would bring that point up. I don't have a rebuttal or explanation. The splits between Ye Shiwen and Lochte has every swimming coach baffled. Supposedly Ye Shiwen passed a drug test without controversy pre-Olympics. Not saying there aren't ways around it but I'm not tarnishing the young Chinese swimmer's reputation just because ASCS brought forth allegations (without proof at the moment), and Conte co-signed with his two cents. Show me solid evidence. Innocent until proven guilty.

Word, only time will tell.

i mean i don't think it's impossible.. just extremely improbable

just out of curiosity.. what do you think phelps could do if he focused solely on the 100 fly and 100 free? (basically all that crap i've been saying about him coming back in 2016)

so basically he could cut out all the mid-distance/distance training he must have to do to be able to swim all those 200s plus the 400 IM.. and also be able to swim all those events in a single meet

I think limiting the program for Brasil 2016 would ultimately be best for Michael Phelps and Coach Bowman. Beijing was a grueling amount of swims (impressed Missy is currently going through 17 swims in London) and I believe it's showing a bit in the London Games for Phelps. Too much on his plate and unrealistic to expect Michael to follow-up the legendary performance in 2008.

100 Free: For me, Adrian came out of nowhere to win the event this year. Michael's biggest competition going forward in my eyes would be Cielo. Plus the Aussies always pump out sprint specialists like Thorpedo, Sullivan, "Missile," and "Rocket." I don't think we've seen the last of Magnussen (21) at all. The Aussie papers were extremely tough on the young man and James admitted he's "mentally exhausted." Failed to qualify for the 50m Free. Roberts (Australia) is also only 21 but not quite as fast as "Missile."

100 Fly: Phelps should be able to continue and dominate this event (best stroke) far easier than the freestyle. Le Clos (20) is potentially a future South African swimming star with the fly. Cavic (28) may still figure in the medal picture by 2016. Ironically, Tyler Clary could pose a future threat in the 100m distance after some success in the 200 event in London.

^ dude did 50.86 in the semis in the 100 fly... and looked more annoyed than tired when he was done.. like it was a necessary evil doing the top time in the world this year

he went 48.08 in the world championships leading off the 4 x 100 free relay.. obviously we dont have a ton of examples of him swimming the 100 free with a flat/normal start at big meets (he went 47.15 on the relay)

i figure he can still go 50 low (maybe 49 high) in the 100 fly.. and 47 low in the 100 free

like you said he wouldn't have that full program.. and he can bulk up a bit like an actual sprinter and actual train specifically for those events

I hope PhelpsGod comes back for 2016 in one or two events just to cement his status as best olympian ever. I don't see how he isn't the undisputed GOAT already but one more gold in 4 years would be impossible to deny.

Hands down, Phelps is the undisputed #1 Olympic swimmer in all of history but greatest Olympian for me is still Jesse Owens. Carl Lewis also very much in the conversation.

Also, just saw the 200 Back Final (replay). When Clary pushed, Lochte didn't have the legs to push back to lock down the gold. Maybe he was thinking about the 200 IM too much, trying to save some gas. Irie snuck in there too, Asian (Chinese and Japanese in particular) swimmers seem to finish events strong, last 25 to 50m. Yi Shiwen, Sun Yang, Irie, etc. Park Tae-Hwan (Korea).

Nope.  The bottom line is she wasn't as sharp as the other 2 Americans in the qualifying round.  They all knew the rules going in. She knew she needed to bring it from day 1.  Gymnasts miss the cut due to that 2-country rule at every Olympics and nobody complained until the American media darling was affected by it.  The fact that she's the world champion means nothing at the Olympics, you still have to go out and perform.  Tough break, but at least she got a team gold and her face on a Wheaties box with her teammates.

Gabby performed with that Cudi sample?

Trust me, we all get that. Big of Jordyn to be in attendance to provide cheering and moral support for her American teammates. Her mother, not so much (still peeved).

The reason I originally stated that it's unfair is for two reasons: The first being Wieber would beat Aly Raisman nine out of ten times in the all-around. Number two, Wieber's absence actually takes away from the women's all-around competition. The only real contenders from start to finish were Douglas, Raisman, Komova, and Mustafina. Jordyn's inclusion would add to the intensity and excitement between the Americans and Russians. I don't know about you, but I would like to see the best in the world compete regardless of nation.

I know she's already legal but Aly is gonna be so bad in a few more years once she gets into her 20s. She's already cute now but a few more years and she'll be :evil

This all-round final would've been better if I didn't see people congratulating Gabby this morning :{. I really do need to stay away from these threads in the morning so I don't get spoiled.

Why didn't they show the Russian girl's floor exercise score on the screen? It seemed like it was going to be real close. She didn't mess up any of her landings and had no major errors. 8o

Aly could get it.. And Mustafina too. She could speak Russian and we can roleplay that we're two spies :hat

Congrats to Gabby

Aly showed poise and class to lose a medal on the (rough) tie-breaking procedure. She trains and is close friends with NT's favorite Alicia Sacramone. Property of Brady Quinn, at the moment.

In comparison I think Komova was as disappointed about second (silver) in the individual all-around as Uchimura was of Japan's second-place (silver) finish in the team event.

Aliya Mustafina has those crazy eyes. You cross her and she'll probably do bodily harm to you. :smokin
