When I think of rim protection, I think of challenging shots at the rim, but also rebounding with limiting second chance opportunities. Having a big in the paint or a nice front line overall gives you a better chance of accomplishing that. What good is it not allowing them to get to the rim "without it being under heavy, dire duress," if you force a perimeter shot but cant grab the defensive rebound if they miss?

Offensive players are way to good now especially with no hand checking, no perimtier d is perfect enough to suffer bad rim protection, you have to have some ability to protect the rim.

Yep. Overwhelming talent almost always wins out. Sure you have a couple of outliers here and there, but generally speaking, the team with the best players win. Lebron, K love, and Kyrie on one team? = NBA finals.

There are teams that can box with them though, but they aren't in the east.

I disagreed with them having good rim protection. Of course I don't think they had elite rim protection.

I aint basing it off of size necessarily but MIA's top 10 defense had more to do with hounding the ball handler and swarming than it did with elite rim protection or even the altering of shots in the paint. I'm sure there's stats keeping up with altered shots in the paint and a team's ranking.

If you want to count swarming as rim protection well then I'd disagree with your definition.

rim protection doesn't necessitate blocking shots, you need a way to make it difficult for people to score when they get in the paint. Thats what I mean by rim protection.

The heat did that, in 10,11, with the speed of their back line rotations, and lebron, wades blocking, stripping, open bigs after the trap.

Obviously if you can have big in the paint that can board or having a front line helps. I never said it didn't. I never said that I preferred perimeter oriented rim protection over a front line.

All I was saying was having bigs that can block isn't necessary to have elite rim protection.

after that it really just depends on the match up that comes out west and they will have alot of vets on that team anyway

Huh :lol ?

I'm not even debating about how important rim protection is. What I'm saying is it can be had without having a footer that can blocks shots, which is what most think elite rim protection is.

You edited your post, but like I said, history tells you that when you have that amount of talent, you at least go straight to the finals, unless there's a team who's more talented than you. The Cavs are more talented than the bulls. Barring injury, the bulls won't beat the cavs.

04' lakers got together went straight to the finals
04' T Wolves went straight to the WCF and lost to the Lakers who...had more talent.
08 celtics got together and went straight to the finals and won and then got back there in 2010
10' Miami heat got together and went straight to the finals and won and haven't left since. (Will probably not make it this year though)
