Orlando dropped the ball.. they just didn't know what they were doing.
Lowballed him, didn't bend over backwards for him, couldn't understand offering that much money to someone that young.
And then Shaq summed it up.. compare it to Jerry West and saying "I'll see what I can do". That's the difference. Recognizing the talent, what it takes to get it, and then going after it.
Shaq clearly wanted LA and the bigger spotlight regardless, but Orlando didn't do themselves any favors.

the mcdonalds color scheme was nice. probably in the minority but i like the blue cartoony jerseys as well. they better then the current rocket jerseys.

There was a poll on the front page of the Orlando Sentinel, the biggest newspaper in Central Florida. A couple of questions were should they fire the coach if it was required to keep Shaq and if Shaq was worth over 100 million and the overwhelming majority of people said no to both.

hindsight is 20/20. no one knew shaq would be the shaq he was on the lakers. his first few years on the lakers when he couldnt deliver a title and kept on getting swept in the 2nd round the slander was crazy. i remember mad people talking wreckless about shaq.

yeah i loved those laker squads even before shaq got there. van exel and eddie jones were nice but im sure you being in la you remember the slander shaq got for getting a gentlemens sweep by utah then got swept twice in a row by utah and the next by sas...man imagine the slander if social media was around back then. wouldve been crazy. .. dude took a lot of heat.
