If you were going to blow up the Cavs Big 3.... You'd have to blow up the entire team sans LeBron and probably Frye & Mo Will if he accepts his player option because they are on good contracts. Simply because there's so much money going to TT & Iman that there is no improving the team anyway.

If the target was Chris Paul, you'd need to trade a whole hell of a lot more than just Kyrie. Clippers wouldn't take a straight up trade. You'd likely need a team like Boston who wants Kevin Love to trade quality picks to the Clippers for it to work.
cp is 31.. kyrie is 24

if that changes anything to your thinking

It does not at all.

CP3 is the better player, and more likely than Kyrie to help the Cavs win a title now. Which is all that matters to LeBron, which means it is all that matters to Gilbert.

Also the Cavs need CP3, more than the Clippers need Kyrie.

Melo is 32 coming off one of the most inefficient years of his career. KP, the primary piece moving forward, is 20 and should mostly be at center in the future. Love is 5 years younger and the pick lets the Knicks rebuild properly.

Not sure what Melo's done to earn this loyalty

^ in the east, to the finals
that's all true.. but clippers get a guy who is 24 and under contract for another 4 seasons

maybe they figure they're not good enough yet and might as well get value for CP while you can

Much rather keep Melo & add on to what Phil did last year that tear it down for the 3rd time in 6 years.

Well, that's a given

Melo's contract is fine.

Someone's gonna give Mike Conley $30M/year this summer but Melo making $24M is crazy talk.

I could see GM bron trying to get CP and melo

No way that would work  Bron moving to the 2? No point in having 2 SF/PF that can both start. CP would a great option as he can pass, can't score as well as Kyrie, but is a better distributor, which is what the Cavs need.

There's more money available this year & next, there isn't enough high caliber players for the money that will be available, so Melo's contract isn't really a hindrance, it's more about fit.

See, you're finding fault in the wrong area, there's no reason Mike Conley should be getting $30M/year

In that case, there's no true fit for Melo and his playing style/ego. It's borderline Iverson-eque to wanna be THAT GUY all the time when you don't need to be. That's one thing I give LBJ and Wade credit for, if neither wanted to relinquish something for the greater good of the team, Miami doesn't win a single finals during that era. Melo is about Melo and not about the team, which won't work no matter where he's at.
