if these **** hitters find their stride and the pitching performs as well as i think they can, the mets can be a dark horse wild card team. can totally see them sneaking into the playoffs and win a pennant in a bunch of 2-0, 3-2 type of ball games.

i have no faith since thats just the way I've been conditioned but they remind me of the giants. only difference is we dont have a posey. wright's washed, grandy is washed, offense is trash. but hey, with that staff and good situational hitting anything is possible.

I fell for the trap last year (my NL pick), and am highly tempted to select them again in the National League. Escobar is an upgrade defensively at 2B over Cabrera. Adding Scherzer as a lead horse is a no-brainer. Harper will rebound from a largely lackluster 2014.

So if I have the Phillies and Cliff Lee situation right:

- He makes $25m in 2015, and there's a team option for $27.5m in 2016

- His buyout price is $12.5m

- If he pitches 200+ innings in 2015 and doesn't spend any time on the DL for shoulder or elbow issues, the team option becomes guaranteed.


Lee pitched 200+ innings in 8 of his 13 seasons so far (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013). To be honest, this guy was on the mound for 31 games with a 2.87 ERA in 2013 -- less than two years ago.

Listen: Every reason he's available right now -- on Feb. 25 -- has to do with his absurd price tag.

His BB9 and SO9 (walks per nine innings and strikeouts per nine innings) were both terrific. BB9 was 1.3 (third best of his career) and his SO9 was 8.0 (the fifth best of his career). At 35 years old.

He's 36 coming into this season, and will be 37 by the end of August. It's not an ideal situation to be paying him $25 million for 2015 if you're Philadelphia or a Phillies fan, but 1.) He's at least on the field, and he's still performing when he's on the field. How many contracts have the Angels given out like this or the Tigers that have just gone straight to hell within a year or two? At least it's not in that realm.

And do I understand the guaranteed team option correct? That if he exceeds 200 innings in 2015, he's guaranteed that $27 million?

Doubt he's going to the Padres by the way.

Yeah you're basically right about Lee's option. If he's not on the DL in 2015 for elbow or shoulder issues and pitches 200 innings in 2015 or 400 innings in 2014-2015 and the option becomes guaranteed. But he has that 20 team no-trade clause. And like a lot of players he may ask a team trading for him to pick up his option if they want him to waive his no-trade.

Good call. I find the Padres an unlikely destination for Lee, even as aggressively active as Preller has conducted business this offseason. However, Boston makes sense. Cherington wouldn't be afraid to take on Lee's enormous contract. Red Sox have a pressing need for a lead ace post-Lester. Boston has an outfield jam, most notably Mookie Betts. FTR, who I think the Sox should not trade. Now an infield jam too with the Moncada signing. Cherington has the pieces to get a deal done, if he so desires.

Yeah but that literally means he has zero chance of pitching over 200+ innings in 2015. Philadelphia wouldn't let that happen. Think about how many difference in millions we're talking about her. You don't think the Phillies are going to do some dirty **** this season and somehow force him out of the rotation in May/June with 'heavy encouragement' to hit the DL?

Unless they stick Lee in there as a 4th OF or he slaps on a helmet and starts to hit, he won't help them anyway. They're still not making the playoffs.

Nah, I mean, they won't make the playoffs. It's just ridiculous how guy sare making the $27 million type of annual salaries like him and not even a shell of their former selves. At least Lee still is maintaining a great K/BB Per-9 inning rate when he is out there. At the very least I can give him props for that.
