Besides Buck, and Melvin, what about Maddon and Ventura? Tampa has literally no offense and Longo has been out for a significant duration. White Sox are refusing to concede the division to Detroit easily. Thought Tigers would cruise in the Central. First year manager helping Dunn's resurgence. Got Rios playing well, seemingly miraculous.

Markakis has been one of the best RFers in the AL this year. Dude has been an absolute BEAST in the leadoff spot.
Gotta give Mark Reynolds his props, too. Not only for what he's been doing w/ the bat as of late, but also w/ the glove.

Disagree, none of that has anything to do with a manager's job. The GM is responsible for filling out the roster, and I don't see how what other teams have done in the offseason is relevant to a manager of the year award. And it's not like the manager is performing FOR those replacement players. The A's actually have a very good team considering their pitching staff and run differential.
Showalter has managed a patchwork pitching staff and below average group of hitters to perfection. I doubt there are many hardcore baseball fans who can name 2 starters on the O's staff. Our 'ace' played in the Japanese league last year. And they're a ridiculous 24-6 in one run games which speaks to his incredible game management.

It makes a difference when the teams in your division improve and become more difficult and managing so many rookies on the rotation

Losing players and getting production out of players with little experience is a huge job

Buck has gotten the most out of Taylor Teagarden, Omar Quintanilla, and most recently, Miguel Gonzalez. And like abovelegit said, he's been amazing with in-game management.
O's were picked to be last in the AL East. They are right in the thick of things. Both Buck and Dan Duquette deserve a lot of credit.
If the O's finish above .500, he should be AL Manager of the Year in a landslide.

A manager has little to no control over player performance. If anything the pitching coach should receive some credit for consistent pitching. A GM should get credit for replacing players. A manager should be judged based on what his job is and what he can control. That doesn't include what other teams have done in terms of their roster. It does include lineup changes, bull pen/game management, and how a team performs relative to it's talent.
And I can't emphasize the 24-6 stat enough. One run games are where a manager has the most influence.

MOTY is Melvin's to lose.It isn't even close to being remotely close. Oakland should have lost 90+ games this year and here they are playing the best baseball in the major leagues.
What's even more impressive is they had all the reason to give up on the season when they were nowhere near the playoff hunt and Melvin kept them playing hard and focused.
I fully expect both teams to choke and miss the playoffs but I'm rooting for them to make the playoffs.Would be nice to both teams in the postseason

EVERYONE had the A's losing 100 games this year. We traded our best pitchers away and let our best hitter walk and replaced them with scraps. For us to be contending now with the second best record in the AL is a testament to the great work Melvin has done. Even the players credit him with keeping them focused on winning one game at a time. Even his mixing up of the lineup constantly to work in bench players gets consistently great results. He knows this club and which buttons to press, better than any other manager.
And I need to see who predicted the A's would be contending for the Wild Card before the season started, because I flat out do not believe that.
