RIP to Willie Mays. I’m pretty sure my grandpa and great uncle knew him since they played some minor league(Negro League) baseball in St. Louis and my grandpa became an activist here in San Francisco. I’ll ask him the next time I see him.

Willie Mays never hit 60 home runs, missed two seasons of baseball due to the draft, yet he stilled hit 660 home runs.
He played in three of the worse parks for a power hitter historically (Polo Grounds, Candlestick Park, and Shea Stadium).
He came back home to Harlem in 2011 after the Giants won the World Series in 2010.
The polo grounds is now the polo grounds housing project.
This is where home plate was and the view of the batter in the box
We named a street here in Harlem after Willie mays called “Willie Mays
Place.

Home plate marker looks like that due to weather conditions mainly . That home plate was placed there in when the Polo Grounds Housing projects opened.
