So backwards to have 3 60 HR years and lead the league with 50 and 49. :lol

I was so excited for this 30 for 30. Not gonna lie. It ended up being a snoozefest.

You ain't wrong. Nostalgia hit for sure, but that's really all it was. And if you were a Cubs fan anticipating, you got shafted because it was basically 80/20 McGwire.

Doc definitely could have gone in deeper but it was still fun flash backs...

It is insane how big McGwire got honestly

Man this documentary took no risks. Was mad safe and boring. Was basically a Mark McGwire documentary that had 5 min worth of interviews with Sammy. I was extremely disappointed, because this 30 for 30 could have been way better if done right. Also, the documentary should have had more interviews with former players. There were way too many corny journalists being interviewed. Sammy had flair and personality and many people haven’t heard from him for years, I was looking forward to hearing him say more. It seemed like he was asked safe questions. Documentary had a chance to be dope. Imagine if they were to ask him about his changing skin color or the corked bat, or him walking off the filed in 2004. We prob won’t hear from Sammy again in a meaningful way for a long time if ever again. Such a missed opportunity.

The documentary didn’t even touch race, when race def played a role in the coverage of this homerun race, even though Sammy doesn’t identify as black. White people typically rooted for Mark and Black Brown people typically rooted for Sammy or KGJ. I remember seeing people being divided at school during this hr race. I really started to think about race more in the 4th grade during this hr race. It would have been dope to interview people who had something to say about the racial and ethnic components of this hr race. Mark McGwire was lifted up as some White savior and people were really invested in seeing in him beat the holy hr record over Sammy, and the documentary didn’t even touch that component of the hr race. The title of the 30 for 30 was whack.
4.5/8

As others have said this wasn't a great 30 for 30 but it was still enjoyable for me personally due to all the nostalgia of that summer it brought back for me. Sammy was definitely an after thought even after that season and likely due to his exit from the Cubs (not saying race didn't play a factor as well).

McGwire was hyped up as the next Babe Ruth and so forth.

Bruce Lee one sucked?

While the Bruce Lee one was relevant, I was pretty disappointed by it. Didn't even really talk about his fights with Nakachi or Wong Jack Man. I just sensed that his family had too much influence over the doc's direction, which made everything feel too safe and basic.

In regards to Sosa/McGuire doc, I don't remember much about that summer except cheering for them both to pass 70. Honestly looking forward to Jr's doc on MLB Network this coming Sunday more haha.

I get it, the director was a Cards fan, so it was gonna be slanted Mark's way, and besides, he did get the 70 so I get it.

But some of the stuff was missed pretty bad. :lol There was 100% ABSOLUTELY a race factor in who was rooting for who. And I thought it was pretty disrespectful to show McGwire FOUR times blowing kisses tapping his chest, but not explaining WHY that was Sammy's thing. Nothing on the hop. Nothing on 2004. Thankfully we got a full segment on a single ejection for McGwire tho.

For the love of Christ, they showed a "scene" from 1998.........with 2018-19 Wrigley in the pics. :lol :rollin (The huge scoreboards we have now, we didn't in 98 folks..... :lol )

That was annoying.

Also tried showing present day footage of people in a bar to make it seem like they were watching the race.

C CP1708 how do you feel about the Cubs not having Sammy back?

I'm pissed. He walked out on the final day of a disappointing 2004 season. New ownership. New players. New GM. New coaches. Won a World Series for heaven's sakes, Christ they gave a ring to Bartman.

Bring Sammy in, have him throw out a first pitch, let 40,000 people stand up and scream for him. He carried that franchise for a decade when they were putrid and captivated the entire country with McGwire/Bonds etc.

Let it go and do the damn right thing. I've tweeted this to the team, Rizzo, anyone I can that could bend their ear someday. I believe it'll happen someday, but I don't know when. But truthfully I don't like our owner very much, I feel pretty confident in saying Theo would absolutely have done this already if it were up to him alone. But Ricketts is a piece of ****.
