2024 MLB Thread; RIP Willie Mays & Pete Rose. Dodgers win #8!

Covid May be a blessing in disguise for us Dodger fans. No way Mookie gets close to what he was asking for after all this.

Who do you guys think will sit out? If I’m a pitcher in a contract year, eff that noise, no way am I playing. (Even though free agency is shot for the next 4-5 years now)

Would you sit out because you'd be afraid of catching COVID and being stigmatized going into free agency?

Because I don't think pitchers really have an increased chance of injury given that it's theoretically now going to be 1/3 of their normal workload.

Unless they had an amazing 2019 and are afraid of regressing under the weird circumstances I guess.

Doughboy :nthat:

Sucks with no Mook, but I love Dough and X at the 2/3. Will be interesting to see how in shape he is.

we betting on who gets the .400 season?

SPs bout to go ham only needing to pitch 10 games or so. I’m expecting a 0.50 era for the cy young winner

Buzzkill time  But I'm still waiting to hear what the plan is here when half a team gets the virus (or suspects they have the virus)....and games are having to be played day after day.

If we've learned anything lately it's that this notion of "one player gets it, then we quarantine him and next man up" is a fallacy. There is almost no such thing as one person in a group/team getting it - one guy gets it then 10, 20, 30 guys get it with him. Look at college football right now.

How we workin that? And we REALLY think we are making it through till the WS? There is virtually no chance this season makes it through IMO - again, unless there is some strategy I am not aware of.

I say it's still 50/50 opening day even happens honestly :lol:

Sorry I'll go back in my hole |l

Bruh I didn't even factor in that a realistic schedule (location wise) needs to be all worked out too.

Damn. What a mess.

Saw something that the Yankees won't play a game outside of the eastern time zone

Here are some official updates, courtesy of The Athletic:

The schedule: In an effort to minimize travel as much as possible, teams will play all 60 games only against their own division and the corresponding interleague division. Every team will play 10 games apiece against each of the other four teams in its division, for a total of 40 games. Those games would largely be broken down into three-game and two-game series. Each club will play a total of 20 games against the corresponding interleague division (i.e., East versus East). Six of those games would be against a team’s interleague “rival” (Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox, etc.). The breakdown of the other 14 games has yet to be finalized, but is expected to involve each team playing two interleague opponents three times apiece and the other two clubs four times apiece. The tentative schedule will include no scheduled doubleheaders. Scheduled doubleheaders would actually limit the ability to reschedule postponed games.

Further:

- MLB's transaction freeze will be lifted Friday at noon ET
- Teams will be allowed to carry 30 players on their big-league roster for the first two weeks of the season, then get down to 28 on the 15th day of the season and then to 26 two weeks after that
- The designated hitter will be used in both leagues
- All pitchers may carry a small wet rag in their back pocket to be used for moisture in lieu of licking their fingers
- All hitters will have to bring their own pine-tar rags, bat donuts and other equipment to and from the on-deck circle — and will have to retrieve their own caps, gloves and sunglasses from the dugout if an inning ends with them on base or batting
- Baseballs used in batting practice can be used only that day, then need to be cleaned and sanitized, and not be re-used for at least five days
- Players, coaches, managers and athletic trainers “must avoid” high fives, fist bumps and hugs
- Spitting, smokeless tobacco and sunflower seeds are all prohibited
- Extra innings: Each half-inning following the ninth inning will begin with a runner on second base. The runner will be the player in the batting order immediately preceding that half-inning’s leadoff hitter
- Showering is “discouraged but not prohibited,” but only Tier 1 people — those in uniform and some of the support staff — can shower at the park
- Covered individuals of MLB (players, coaches, on-field people, etc) will have their temperature and symptoms checked at least twice per day. This can change if need be
- Any games that start, but are then halted by weather, will now be considered suspended games - meaning they will be resumed at the point where they were stopped. The purpose of this rule is to avoid long weather delays in an era in which health officials advise having players together at the ballpark for as little time as possible
- Trade deadline is Aug 31

I don’t believe that’s correct at all. MLB minimum is 563,500. Unless you’re accounting minors, which I believe aren’t fully part of MLBPA

nope they are getting paid for 60 games which is why a ton of players will be making less than 100k.

Also, puig to the giants very likely by Friday.

gonna be an interesting season for a lot of clubs like the giants who normally would have no shot. But as we saw last July, this current form is capable of making some sort of run.Just wanna see Joey Bart and Ramos up at some point.

DH in the NL? Someone convince Barry Bonds to get out of retirement and play DH for the Giants.

It's only 60 games!

Astros playing at Dodger Stadium :) without fans in the bleachers to bang garbage can lids and trash talk their tattoos :(
