I'm new to this lottery thing (never played, but intrigued) but how do they determine what the next jackpot amount is?
Is it based on how much people spent on the last batch?

The lottery does it through computer generation... They use past results/scenarios..  And 1000s of computer generated scenarios  along with estimates of how much demand they think will be..

At $40 mil jackpot only goes up $10 mil  if no one wins because demand is low
At $363 demand is huge.. So if no one wins it goes up by $110 mil

I don't think I'd even want to win this much money. It's completely life altering. All you know will change. FAST! Its not like being a 1st round pick in the NFL Draft. That's a lot of money but we're talking enough money to become a partial OWNER of a sports franchise.
