PEMDAS says 288

because 48 / 2(12)

the multiplication/division part goes from left to right, so divide 48 by 2 first, then multiply by 12

You gave the wrong problem.

You do the parentheses first, so 9+3=12.
Which leaves you with 48÷2*12
Then you go from left to right.
48÷2=24.
24*12=288.
THE DAMN ANSWER IS 288.

We addressed your reasoning with ours, you haven't done that yet. Check out the juxtaposition problem that was posted either this page or the last page. Then come back with a rebuttal please. Otherwise, cease posting.

Math teacher, or professor? I'll run this by a Calc professor come Monday.

What the @#$# are you serious right now lol

The answer to this problem is POSITIVE ONE no matter what you do. You just go from left to right.

As for the original problem, the answer is 288. Add the parentheses and you get 12. Then from there you go from left to right, so you would end up with 24 x 12 = 288.

Exactly. That juxtaposition is used to represent multiplication. It's the same thing as a * or a x. Anyone who thinks otherwise are overanalyzing the problem and making it harder than it really is.

the parenthesis doesn't mean you have to "get rid" of them. It simply means multiplication. Being that mulitplication and division are the same in the order of operations, you work from left to right. 288 is the answer.

For the answer to be 2, the equation would have to look like this. (48÷2(9+3)).
