Notre Dame need to be independent to recruit and succeed the way they do. Their success is linked to being THE national college football brand and school and recruiting nationally (and enrolling regular students and their future alumni donations nationally.) That requires playing games yearly from coast to coast. They're not about to sign up to only play teams in the deep south.

Could you imagine Brian Kelly playing a 9 game SEC schedule? He'd literally stab a student on the sideline by week 6.
