I knew it was coming.

You can set your watch by it on here.

god sometimes i really hate nt.  i'm so tired of my people immediately throwin the race card out there while ironically throwin the race card out there.  if this was a white or asian or any other color, y'all wouldn't eem care, be talmbout throwin them in jail and swallowin the key.  ish is ridiculous after awhile.  she made what was in essence a bomb.  'stupid' is pourin a bottle of water over the principal's head.  crime is mixing dangerous chemicals out in front of a packed school ESPECIALLY with all the damn school violence, the boston thing, etc.  she said she didn't know what was going to happen, so instead of asking teach in the lab she goes ahead and mixes it wherever?!  doesn't make sense at all and if she wasn't black, everyone here on nt would be sayin the exact same thing, lookin for some conspiracy ish but cuz she's black, she's given all the benefit of the doubt and is a little junior rosa parks.  come on fambs.

What are you even talking about? How do you know what people would care about? You basically just called everyone racist since you assume their perspective would shift based on the color of the student. Cause black folks don't care about whites or asians or any other colors right? Try to keep it real sometimes brotha, instead of being immediately repulsed at the thought of a "race card". Pretty much everyone said a suspension or expulsion was justified, 2 felony charges is way out of line and anyone who says otherwise has their judgement clouded.

And technically, pouring water over a principals head is assault.

"Wilmot mixed a household toilet cleaner with aluminum in an 8 oz. plastic bottle, causing the top to pop and some smoke to rise."

Quit with the exaggeration. Next, folks gon' start talmbout [mentos + coke = attempt at making a bomb]...

The nature of the punishment is beyond ridiculous, plain and simple. We'd all still cry foul had the victim been white or asian, because the punishment DOES NOT fit the "crime", if you even want to call it that.

Furthermore, if some feel the need to emphasize the race of the victim, Kiera Wilmot, it's because an overwhelming amount of data and evidence has shown that, time and time again, in this country, "blackness" alone has been cause for indictment; black folks are severely and disproportionately punished for crimes that other races recieve a "slap-on-the-wrist" for.
Keira being black and having received such a stiff sentence may all be coincidental, but given the history of victimization experienced by black folks at the hands of the law, you'd be foolish to disregard the role of race in this whole affair.

...
the girl didn't get beat on school property by the cops while screaming for help, she created once again as someone said in a post 9-11, bombing, school violence world something that was essentially a bomb.  no, y'all WOULDN'T still cry foul at all.  this is nt!  there'd be jokes upon jokes, especially since it's a female and absolutely no tears would be shed except for folks in this thread keepin it objective and we'd still be the minority opinion.  the nature of the punishment fits the crime, under laws.  sorry if that hurts peoples' feelings, but it is.  everyone knows what mentos and coke does and no smoke occurs..methinks you're the one using hyperbole and exaggeration.  it's not exaggerating saying whatever she mixed together in that bottle exploded and caused enough of a scene well beyond that of a simple soft drink and some candy

.

yea yea, cops are ********.  cops hate everybody.  if she had just been randomly stopped by a school official or a cop or something and frisked or harassed or whatever i'd be 100% ready to lynch.  i do think it's an overreaction.  i do think it's just a 'show' and because of her background in schooling, clean record and the fact that no one is actually injured (not to mention she's a minor) will pay dividends for her going forward - i just don't believe all this is solely because she's black.  i could be wrong, sure.  i'm just really, really tired of my brothers and sisters constantly throwing a racist slant towards everything.  it's exasperating.  i used to do that in my own life, all the time.  every time some old white lady looked a certain way towards me, i just knew she was calling me a ****** in her mind and hated me and in turn i hated her.  every time i got pulled over (even if i was admittedly in the wrong) it was cuz i was black and ol dude had a hardon for bustin blacks.  every single thing in my life was dominated by this thought process and just continually landed me in trouble.  now that i've grown past that it's much easier to tell those real situations from the ones i had built up in my mind as a defense mechanism.  there's still racism alllll around us but it's important to try and tell the REAL cases from the, 'oh no they're black, let's call up the reverend,' type deals.  i happen to think this is one of them although i suppose i should be more tolerant of others if they believe differently.

well i just read a few other articles on this subject and a ******** of people from that particular county are saying (white people too) that a lot of officials there are corrupt and pretty passive aggressively racist, so ima take back all that up there because if it's true than this makes much more sense.  i'm man enough to admit when i may be wrong and this could be one of those times so sorry!

She doesn't deserve a felony for this.
She's just a young stupid kid that did something stupid.

kids are stupid :lol felonies are OD but she definitely should have gotten expelled. could have easily been someone telling her ammonia and bleach just "make smoke".

did no research. put them in a plastic bottle. put the cap on.

probably didn't eem have goggles on :{

I gotta say I'm skeptical of this "science experiment," like she just mixed these "random" household chemicals together to see what would happen, and where I'm at, we've been hearing about kids mixing chemicals in water bottles and leaving them to explode for a couple of years now.

Either way, a felony is OD, this sounds like the kind of thing you should get suspended for. But hey, anything to further hinder her ability to penetrate the work force right?

She made a works bomb in a school?

Yeah...felony seems about right.

Keep in mind that this is separated from the Boston marathon bombing by only 3 weeks. Any sort of "bomb" related activity is going to be taken very very seriously.

Sounds like she made an acid bomb. My friends used to use.toilet cleaner, aluminum foil and shake it up til it got hot then boom.

It said she was a good student who got good grades. No one was hurt.....what am i missing?

Whatever happened to "boys will be boys" (in this case kids will be kids). No harm no foul? What is the world coming to where everything is blown out of proportion (pun not intended)

Imagine if every time you did something stupid as a kid you were arrested. The time i broke a window playing baseball, the time i hit a car with a soccer ball as it passed my house, the time i built a snow man in the middle of the road around a bend to watch cars swerve out of the way/hit it. I'd be in prison for years

If she was white there wouldn't be a felony being pushed on her.

This reminds me of the Kanye "George Bush doesnt care about black people"

Just regularly scrolling them BAM, comes out of nowhere so blatant . Only difference is everyone that stepped in this thread saw this coming eventually. Didnt expect 2nd comment though.

the fear is taking over and clouding our judgement as a society. Common sense has left, and everyone is in panick mode crucifying the wrong people. I understand that it wasn't a sanctioned project, and more about curiosity than anything else. We've all been there, I wonder what would happen if I mixed chemical A with chemical B? Who in this forum didn't take Chemistry in HS? Just off that she deserves to be suspended. It wasn't smart for her do, Iget that. Now if you bring the authorities into it and they question the girl and can see she obviously isn't a terrorist, and had no ill intentions with the project why even take it to that level? The school overreacted, but the authorities should have been the ones to calm this **** down. Hell if the school wanted to expel her only I wouldn't feel bad, but to treat her like a damn criminal. Charging her as an adult, c'mon man enough is enough.

She should be punished but felony? Come
On that could screw her whole life up over what seems like a prank.
Me and a coworker were just talking about these "bombs" yesterday and how long they were. We both set one off in highschool

I'm white and its blatantly obvious that if the girl was white at worst she would've gotten a minor slap on the wrist.

^Exactly. Blacks are judged to the full extent of the law, to the letter. Whites are typically punished based on the severity of the action. Just like Iverson's maiming by mob fiasco for a brawl.

pretty much. and this case here is a clear cut example of this. anyone who thinks she got what she deserved/and not see this case for what it is, is truly ignorant. don't even care about the "its just my opinion" reasoning. white kid shoots his brother by accident, he gets a pat on the back...black girls makes a pop bottle go poof, LOCKDOWN.

.....no1 should be surprised these days. typical murica.

My favorite part from the story.

According to WTSP, Wilmot told police that she was merely conducting a science experiment. Though her teachers knew nothing of the specific project, her principal seems to agree.

Genius.

Disgusting. She's a minor so hopefully her record will be sealed.

There's no need for arrest or expulsion. Suspension, I could agree with.
a superintendents suspension maybe (this is a suspension which u r suspended for like 6 months and have to attend a different "school" during your suspension), but after the boston bombings she should have known not to play with anything like that, shes 16 whihc is more than old enough to know whats shes doing

Unwarranted. No one was hurt. She should be punished, not to have her life ruined.

So what would've been her punishment if she was mixed, Latino, or Asian?
If she were lighter skin and mixed I'm pretty sure it would have been different. I'm mixed, black and white, and really fair skin with freckles. In college, I did tons of dumb stuff; Stuff that police officers have seen me do, and I was always let go with a warning. So many times I got, "You look like a good kid, stop doing stupid sh**, and I was sent on my way without a hassle.  I know it's hard to believe, but color, race perception, and what people identify with such things plays a huge role in our society. The self-hate in regards to color in black culture is prevalent because people do treat you differently based on the color of your skin. and this is true in regards to the color spectrum of black people and their corresponding treatment concerning whites. The world doesn't want to admit it, but race shapes our treatment of people a great deal.
