Has anyone seen explanation for why they can't do the big blow-molded bag? Is it just a cost savings? Drives me nuts... all the retros look like fakes with the new style air bag!

There isn't any real technical reason behind it, it's mostly just saving costs, like you assumed.
Recreating the tooling of an older sneaker is the hardest part in making a proper retro version.
That's why we also never got a proper 96 retro.
They'd rather put out something half-finished because they know people will buy it anyways instead of doing the full job.

These are rumoured to be the am93s releasing in feb pretty heartbreaking to see that they look exactly like the 2014 retros and nothing seems to be updated from first glances.
