Asian Culture Discussion Thread

Japanese curry, banh mi, Korean fried chicken, hsinan chicken rice, HK Cafes, ramen, gyoza, budae jigae etc

There’s a lot of Korean owned sushi places i think aren’t great as well
Yes we know.

I'm seeing this image circulating as a show of support during BLM. Some big influencers have reposted it.

Picture is hard but there's some debate about the term "yellow peril." Some people are trying to "reclaim" it and others think we should dead it. What you think?

Bit cliche, but understand the meaning.
Never liked the “reclaim” idea.
Kinda stupid to say derogatory words lose Hate when targets use against each other.
Will never agree with that idea.
Definitely nothing wrong with reminding people, including ourselves, that the word part of a much larger part of History that still affect us today.

Followup:
Reminded me.
Don’t ever get lectured by those we don’t even know that Asian Americans were part of and supported Black Power/Civil Rights Movement way back in the day. OGs. Many names and organizations.
Worth the study.

Exactly hence why i prefer eating traditional dishes prepared by someone whos from that country

I wonder how its gonna be like several decades from now when all those "Asian-owned restaurants" (that survive both the COVID-19 economic depression AND these protest riots) will be taken over by their "american-born children" as the more traditional-native folk start retiring out of running those businesses.

Race in America has often been a black and white issue. We're often forgotten. A little of it is for traditional Asian households, we're taught to respect authority and "not cause any trouble", which leads to lower participation in politics and activism.

This generation got to take a lead and speak up on all issues - we're called the "model minority" not because they actually admire us, but because we're less of a threat in their eyes. That **** has to change

Don't let these heroes get lost to history. Share them with your cousins/nieces/nephews.

On "Yellow Peril", I kinda like the idea of flipping it as a sign of aggression. If they want to be scared of Asian folks, give them a reason to be afraid. :pimp:

I always wondered this as well. I honestly believe they'll soon disappear after a few generations.

Less and less people are immigrating to the US I believe as other nations that were once poor are finally modernizing.

Also, many immigrant-american kids arent tryna learn how to cook.

The most you'll be seeing will be Asian-Fusion places being the modern replacement of the traditional spots that we're use to seeing.

Example

Stop posting these. It doesn't fit in the "model minority" agenda! /s

AS long as there new immigrants coming from these countries, there will be places to cater to their tastes.

That why its important to be aware that youre Asian American, but also embrace the culture of your ancestors.

After the Japanese from the West Coast got out of the internment camps after WWII, they went the hell back. Another huge chunk went back during the bubble economy of the 80s.
I wouldn't blame Asians if they went back.
Like Akira said, the West dont give a S about Asian men. The women they'll gladly fetishize.

Never had white claw. Gives me vineyard vines and gentrification vibes
