everyone hates on Ikea...can anyone vouch for them, or do yall recommend going elsewhere for a cheaper alternative?

Depends in what you want to buy. Their cheap stuff is cheap, but they do carry some better quality items. The key to owning ikea stuff is to mix and match throughout the home.

I think certain items are better than others at Ikea. For example, I'd rather invest the money on a quality couch than buy an Ikea couch. Some might vouch for it.. but if it's something you're using all the time and you need it to be quality, pay the extra money and it'll be worth it. I think I remember one or two out of ALL their couches being comfortable.. and it was probably the most expensive one.
A lot of their stuff just feel so cheap that I wouldn't even want to use it.. much less expect it to last. But a lot of their stuff is fine. I went in there a couple months ago looking for bed frames and dressers. A couple that looked good felt cheap as hell, others felt sturdy, solid, and worth the price.
I wouldn't make my entire apartment Ikea
but it's worth it for some of the stuff.

Exactly. 50-70% of their products are generic, cheap, or UN-appealing.
I did get a great computer desk with slide out keyboard tray for ~$70 years ago which has held up well. I also got my duvet covers/blanket there. The have ok canvas art for the money. The rugs they carry are also decent.
The couches are indeed awful, all of them look generic, I didn't see any leather couches at all when I went a week ago.
I need to go back soon to get a new trash can

I don't know that I would ever buy large furniture (bed, couch, dresser, etc.) from Ikea, but I have plenty of smaller pieces (smaller TV stands, bookshelves, desks, etc.) that have held up quite well over a couple years of use. The accessories (lamps, trashcans, etc.) usually hold up pretty well, too.
One of my favorite items in my bedroom came from Ikea probably 5 years ago. It's a little shelf that I have hanging above my bed with lights on the bottom of it.

Ikea furniture is great for college life. Good for bachelor life. Bad for grown man life.
However, small decorative pieces (excluding the lamps), some rugs, plants, etc. are of pretty decent quality for all walks of life, I've noticed.

I wouldn't buy anything that's going to get heavy (even moderately) wear from Ikea. Nothing I'm going to sleep on or lay on, sit on is even questionable if it's any kind of fiberboard based material. You can get some decent storage options, even some basic tables, desks, and such. Plus you have to go check it out in store if you can to get an idea of how something like the drawers work, if the hardware is decent and everything or it just won't be worth it in the long run.
Like someone else said, it's fine to mix it in but I think you can do better than outfitting your whole place in Ikea. I'd rather buy some secondhand stuff if money is an issue and repurpose it, paint, modify, etc to make it more your style.

Here is an ikea dinning table that my wife and I purchased. It is made of solid pine. Our chairs are from pier1 and will be sanded and repainted. We are in the process of decorating our new townhomes so bare with me.

The aeron chair by Herman Miller is indeed comfortable. my employer bought like dozens. but they got the vinyl arm rest which are awful.
The big downside is there is no head rest, I think it's attachable unfortunately.

Mez that table is sick! I loved the wood one, but I was getting rid of a different West Elm table in that same color plus the white went better with my new set up, Girlslovewaffles lives inside a waffle truck, his opinion is not valid.

When I first moved on my own, I swore by Ikea, it's great start up furniture, specially when you start from scratch, we've been on our own for some years and slowly we are switching over to better quality stuff, mainly West Elm, I LOVE THAT PLACE....got our tillary couches from there, our table also went on Craiglist and got our dining room table, be surprise what bargains you'll find on CL for West Elm stuff.
