Nope not a fan of the style at all, to each their own though.

Although you guys said it has been around for years I don't recall guys wearing the top button buttoned growing up in the 80's or 90's. I don't know if I purposely blocked it out, but doesn't ring a bell. Now that I think about it, in the 90's I remember everyone wearing Polo/Nautica/Hilfiger shirts with the top button undone here in VA.
