arius Miles' hope of returning to the NBA is not going to happen with the Celtics [team stats].

The longshot free-agent signee, who missed two full seasons after microfracture surgery on his knee, was waived today by the Celtics, bringing the Green's roster down to the league maximum of 15.

"Darius was a model citizen during his time here in Boston," said GM Danny Ainge. "He showed that he still has a lot of basketball left in him."

Miles, a former No. 3 overall pick out of high school in the 2000 draft, played in six preseason games for the C's, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds. He had career averages of 10.6 points and 5.2 boards, but hadn't played since he suffered the injury during the 2005-06 season while with the Portland Trail Blazers.

As the only non-guaranteed contract of those in camp, Miles was the best bet to be cut. And when he didn't wow the coaches with his game, the word came today.

The 27-year-old Miles did not see any action in Friday night's loss to the New York Knicks at the TD Banknorth Garden, and that was not a good sign. Celtics coach Doc Rivers has started to work his rotation players into regular-season form and the DNP was a sign that Miles might not be a part of that mix.

After the game, Rivers said, "We're still learning about three or four guys. But someone is not going to make this team who is good enough to make an NBA roster. It's not an easy decision, but I would like to do it sooner than later.

"I want to give someone a chance (to sign with another team) when we make the decision."

That someone, we learned today, is Miles.

It was not for weed...it was something in a diet pill that falls under a banned substance in the league..

Some other team will pick him up sometime this season...
