Chris Hayes (MSNBC) Spoofs how the media covers black news stories

http://m.voices.yahoo.com/why-msnbcs-ratings-tanked-done-12163714.html

One does not have to be a confirmed righty to reach for the antacid after seeing Chris Matthews or Rachel Maddow provide rants that pass for analysis. There just doesn't seem to be an audience for people who suggest that Obama's opponents are all racist or that the tea party had it coming to them when the IRS decided to be a political weapon. That speaks very well of Americans, regardless of political persuasion.

Numbers speak for themselves.. MSNBC sucks

Really bad.
Bro what does the ratings have to do with FOX being racist or stereotyping(which is what OP's video basically shows through satire)?

LAHH is one of the top rated shows, but that doesn't mean its a positive message. Your ratings argument does not change the fact of how racist FOX News can be.
Ratings are t really can't be the end all be all on if a show is good or better. There are PLENTY of shows that are GREAT but didn't have the best ratings.

"Nonmarital" births are HIGHLY correlated with income and educational attainment.  Your statistics - oops, you didn't provide any - fail to responsibly control for this.

If it's your argument that "culture" is to blame, then explain to me why it is that, according to the latest US Census data, 64% of recently born American Indian children were born out of wedlock.  Is that also because of rap music?  (And don't you listen to that, too, by the way?)

In households with under $10,000 in annual income, over 68.9% of recently births were out of wedlock.

That figure is over 60% for household incomes under $15,000, and over 50% for all household incomes under $25,000.

Of the world's 35 wealthiest countries, the US ranks second-worst in child poverty, behind only Romania.  (This according to a 2012 report published by UNICEF.)

As for the "prison statistics" read The New Jim Crow.  If you're talking about a "criminal culture" of drug consumption, consider the following:

The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2000) found that White teenagers are over 33% more likely to have sold illegal drugs than their Black counterparts.

Usage rates for marijuana are approximately the same regardless of race.  However, according to this same survey, White students are SEVEN TIMES more likely to use cocaine and heroin.  Before you say "well, that's just self-report survey data," bear in mind that White youth visit hospital emergency rooms due to illegal drug use three times more than Black youth.

Yet, despite this, THREE QUARTERS of those imprisoned for drug crimes are Black or Latino.

Hmm, so you were saying about this spoof?  Seems to me like you're getting most of YOUR information from the very sources being lampooned here.
MSNBC Just Had Its Most Dreadful Ratings Period In 6 Years
rachel-maddow-msnbc-ratings.jpg

AP

Despite a heavy period of news that included the Boston Marathon bombings and the Jodi Arias trial, MSNBC's second-quarter ratings plunged to their lowest level since 2007.

In primetime, MSNBC drew an average of 584,000 total viewers and 196,000 viewers in the key 25-54 age demographic. Those numbers were down 16% and 12%, respectively, from the second quarter of 2012. And they accounted for quarter lows not seen since the fourth and second quarters of 2007, respectively.

The network had seen signs of this coming in some dreadful monthly ratings, particularly in May. The same factors contributed to the network's ratings decline over the full quarter. "The Rachel Maddow Show" suffered its lowest-rated quarter in terms of total viewers since 2008. And June alone was the lowest rated month ever for Maddow in both total viewers and in the 25-54 group.

New host Chris Hayes continues to pull in sluggish ratings for "All In With Chris Hayes," which in its first full quarter on air provided MSNBC with the lowest-rated 8 p.m. hour in the 25-54 demographic since 2006.

It comes as a disappointment to a network that built much post-election hype while surging in the key 25-54 demographic immediately after President Barack Obama's re-election. BuzzFeed said MSNBC was poised to challenge Fox News, but that hasn't been the case.

Here's a look at the year-over-year plunge:

msnbc%20ratings.png

Business Insider (Data from Nielsen)

Fox News continues to remain at the top of the ratings among the cable networks, its 46th consecutive quarter there and 138th consecutive month. In total viewers, Fox News beat CNN and MSNBC combined in both total day and in primetime viewers, while surpassing both in the key 25-54 demographic.

The network also had the five highest rated cable news programs in the quarter: "The O’Reilly Factor"  (2,859,000 total viewers);  "Hannity"  (2,107,000); "The Five"  (2,096,000); "Special Report with Bret Baier"  (2,071,000); and "The Fox Report with Shepard Smith"  (1,814,000).

But Fox's total-day viewership gain is most owed to Megyn Kelly, who will soon be moving to primetime. "America Live," in the 1-3 p.m. ET hours, saw its second-best rated quarter ever.

Six months into new President Jeff Zucker's reign, CNN's second-quarter ratings were a bit of a mixed bag. The network did see surges in both total-day and primetime viewers compared to the second quarter of 2012, putting it in second place above MSNBC. Still, its June ratings dipped to the network's lowest point since last August, before Zucker came in.

Average age of Fox News viewer is 65.

The U.S. population 65 and older is now the largest in terms of size and percent of the population

I'd wager a large portion of that population does not have smartphones, tablets, computers, etc to get their news from. Do you see how this could lead to the high ratings for Fox News?
TV Is Americans' Main Source of News

Preferred news source varies by age, education, and politics, among other factors
by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- Television is the main place Americans say they turn to for news about current events (55%), leading the Internet, at 21%. Nine percent say newspapers or other print publications are their main news source, followed by radio, at 6%..

ckz5gxwdak-tygsoyyf3dq.png

These results are based on a Gallup poll of 2,048 national adults conducted June 20-24, in which Americans were asked to say, unaided, what they consider to be their main source of news about U.S. and global events.

More than half the references to television are general, with 26% simply saying they watch television or TV news, 4% saying they watch local TV news, and 2% saying they watch the "evening news." The two leading 24-hour cable news channels -- Fox News and CNN -- are named by 8% and 7%, respectively. However, no other specific channel -- including MSNBC, PBS, BBC, and all of the U.S. broadcast networks that once dominated the news landscape -- is mentioned by more than 1% of Americans.

The vast majority of those citing the Internet -- 18% of all Americans -- either mention the Internet generally or say they get their news "online." Two percent identify Facebook, Twitter, or social media as their source, while 1% mention a specific online news site.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal are each named by 1% of Americans -- the only specific print publications to earn as much as 1% in the poll.

As a measure of U.S. adults' perception of their primary news source, the question provides insights into the importance of various types of media and news outlets as information sources to the public. It is not meant to indicate the total reach each news outlet has in the population, nor do the results necessarily correspond with television ratings data.

TV Is Primary News Source for All Age Groups

If the current media preferences of young adults are any indicator of the future, the data offer good news for TV, but bad news for print media. Half of adults aged 18 to 29 and half aged 30 to 49 identify television as their main source of news. This is nearly double the rate for the Internet even among these more tech-savvy populations. However, it does differ from older generations who put relatively more emphasis on TV and less on the Internet.

At the same time, heavy reliance on print is exclusive to seniors, among whom 18% cite newspapers or other print publications as their main source of news. By contrast, 6% to 8% of younger age groups rely on print.

Few adults of any age say their main source of news is radio. While many Americans certainly tune in to radio for entertainment as well as talk radio, it is clearly not the place most turn for hard news about current events.

fk3c6e58uui2hqr8hfkgtq.png

In additional to older Americans, highly educated Americans -- college postgraduates -- put the most emphasis on newspapers or other print publications, with 19% naming it as their main source of news. However, this drops to 7% among college graduates, 8% among those with only some college education, and 7% among those with no college experience.

-smgwumzrkuuzh_byc6xlq.png

Employment Also a Key Determinant of News Choices

Working Americans -- those employed, either full or part time -- are much more likely than those not currently working to identify the Internet as their main source of news, 26% vs. 15%. Those not working prefer television at a correspondingly higher rate; nevertheless, television is the top choice among both groups.

Additionally, employed adults are more likely to cite radio as their primary news source, likely reflecting the listening habits of some commuters.

ax-typkhlkwfb0zjuavnyw.png

Republicans Lean Most Toward TV; Democrats Are Heaviest Print Users

Gallup also finds slight partisan differences in where Americans choose to get their news, although television dominates among all three major groups.

On a relative basis, Republicans are more likely than independents or Democrats to say their main source of news is television. At the same time, independents rely the most of the three groups on the Internet, while Democrats put the most emphasis on print.

bmg2sjqykkswqzctukhxag.png

Fox News is a clear driver of Republicans' higher tendency to turn to television for their news, with 20% versus 6% of independents and 1% of Democrats, naming it as their main news source. No other television, print, or online news source generates as much loyalty from either Democrats or independents. The closest is CNN, named by 10% of Democrats, 6% of independents, and 4% of Republicans.

nzqvcwgnuu-mh_lvvrbegg.png

Fox and CNN Viewers Differ Demographically, Politically

Underscoring the different partisan preferences of those who rely on Fox News vs. CNN for their news, the demographic and political profile of Americans who name each as their top news source are highly distinct. For example, nearly two-thirds of Fox News-oriented news consumers are 50 and older, compared with barely a third of CNN-oriented news consumers: 66% vs. 35%. Relatedly, 69% of the Fox News group is married, versus 37% of the CNN group.

Additionally, core CNN viewers are more likely than core Fox News viewers to be male, while core Fox News viewers are much more likely than core CNN viewers to be white, Protestant, attend church weekly, and to earn $75,000 or more per year.

The demographic profile of Americans who name Fox News as their main news source is similar to the profile of Republicans, and for good reason. Two-thirds of core Fox News viewers identify themselves as Republican, and 94% either identify as or lean Republican. By contrast, 46% of core CNN viewers identify as Democrat, and 63% identify as or lean Democratic.

Relatedly, 79% of the Fox News group describes their political views as conservative, 17% as moderate, and 2% as liberal. Among the CNN group, 21% are conservative, 51% are moderate, and 26% are liberal. Just 2% of the Fox News group, compared with 57% of the CNN group, approves of the job President Barack Obama is doing.

Bottom Line

Americans have an abundance of sources at their disposal for acquiring news, and accordingly, Gallup received various answers when asking respondents what they consider to be their main source. Still, the television medium leads all others, and by a wide margin over the Internet, while print and radio lag well behind. This does not mean Americans get no news from print, radio, or to a lesser degree the Internet; just that relatively few see these as their main source.

The poll also documents the balkanization of news, primarily based on politics, but also to a lesser degree by age and education. Republicans have a strong orientation toward Fox News and Democrats lean somewhat more toward CNN and various other news outlets. Younger Americans seek out Internet news more than other age groups, and highly educated Americans tend more than other groups to get their news the old-fashioned way, reading a newspaper or magazine.

Scientific polling has been around for less than a century, but had it existed from the nation's start, it surely would have documented dramatic changes in how Americans receive information about national and global events, shifting from word of mouth, to pamphlets and newspapers, to magazines. The advent of radio ushered in the modern era of people experiencing the news together, herding families into their living rooms. This was eventually replaced by the television set. Today, the Internet is ascending, but it remains to be seen if it will displace television as much as it will newspapers. Right now, the Internet is strongest among younger, working Americans, but presumably, this will change as the population ages. At the same time, newspapers strongest market, seniors, will disappear, leaving the future of that medium in serious doubt.

This is the first time Gallup has measured Americans' media habits with this particular open-ended question, but in 1957, Gallup approached the same issue by asking: If you had to give up one of these -- radio, television, the newspaper, or magazines -- which one would be the hardest for you to give up? Americans at that time were most likely to name television, at 45%, followed by newspapers (27%), radio (21%), and magazines (4%).

Survey Methods

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 20-24, 2013, with a random sample of 2,048 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones and cellular phones, with interviews conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 50% cellphone respondents and 50% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by region. Landline telephone numbers are chosen at random among listed telephone numbers. Cellphone numbers are selected using random digit dial methods. Landline respondents are chosen at random within each household on the basis of which member had the most recent birthday.

Samples are weighted to correct for unequal selection probability, nonresponse, and double coverage of landline and cell users in the two sampling frames. They are also weighted to match the national demographics of gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cellphone only/landline only/both, cellphone mostly, and having an unlisted landline number). Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2012 Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets are based on the July-December 2011 National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets are based on the 2010 census. All reported margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting.

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

HOUSTON  — One recent day at Dr. Natalie Carroll's OB-GYN practice, located inside a low-income apartment complex tucked between a gas station and a freeway, 12 pregnant black women come for consultations. Some bring their children or their mothers. Only one brings a husband.

Things move slowly here. Women sit shoulder-to-shoulder in the narrow waiting room, sometimes for more than an hour. Carroll does not rush her mothers in and out. She wants her babies born as healthy as possible, so Carroll spends time talking to the mothers about how they should care for themselves, what she expects them to do — and why they need to get married.

Seventy-two percent of black babies are born to unmarried mothers today, according to government statistics. This number is inseparable from the work of Carroll, an obstetrician who has dedicated her 40-year career to helping black women.

More women opting for preventive mastectomy - but should they be?
Rates of women who are opting for preventive mastectomies, such as Angeline Jolie, have increased by an estimated 50 percent in recent years, experts say. But many doctors are puzzled because the operation doesn't carry a 100 percent guarantee, it's major surgery -- and women have other options, from a once-a-day pill to careful monitoring.

"The girls don't think they have to get married. I tell them children deserve a mama and a daddy. They really do," Carroll says from behind the desk of her office, which has cushioned pink-and-green armchairs, bars on the windows, and a wooden "LOVE" carving between two African figurines. Diamonds circle Carroll's ring finger.

As the issue of black unwed parenthood inches into public discourse, Carroll is among the few speaking boldly about it. And as a black woman who has brought thousands of babies into the world, who has sacrificed income to serve Houston's poor, Carroll is among the few whom black women will actually listen to.

"A mama can't give it all. And neither can a daddy, not by themselves," Carroll says. "Part of the reason is because you can only give that which you have. A mother cannot give all that a man can give. A truly involved father figure offers more fullness to a child's life."

Statistics show just what that fullness means. Children of unmarried mothers of any race are more likely to perform poorly in school, go to prison, use drugs, be poor as adults, and have their own children out of wedlock.

Pat Sullivan  /  AP
Dr. Natalie Carroll, an obstetrician practicing in Houston, encourages her patients to get married. "The girls don't think they have to get married. I tell them children deserve a mama and a daddy. They really do," Carroll says.

The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.

This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent.

Many accused Moynihan, who was white, of "blaming the victim:" of saying that black behavior, not racism, was the main cause of black problems. That dynamic persists. Most talk about the 72 percent has come from conservative circles; when influential blacks like Bill Cosby have spoken out about it, they have been all but shouted down by liberals saying that a lack of equal education and opportunity are the true root of the problem.

'Nobody talks about it'
Even in black churches, "nobody talks about it," Carroll says. "It's like some big secret." But there are signs of change, of discussion and debate within and outside the black community on how to address the growing problem.

Research has increased into links between behavior and poverty, scholars say. Historically black Hampton University recently launched a National Center on African American Marriages and Parenting. There is a Marry Your Baby Daddy Day, founded by a black woman who was left at the altar, and a Black Marriage Day, which aims "to make healthy marriages the norm rather than the exception."

In September, Princeton University and the liberal Brookings Institution released a collection of "Fragile Families" reports on unwed parents. And an online movement called "No Wedding No Womb" ignited a fierce debate that included strong opposition from many black women.

"There are a lot of sides to this," Carroll says. "Part of our community has lost its way."

There are simple arguments for why so many black women have children without marriage.

The legacy of segregation, the logic goes, means blacks are more likely to attend inferior schools. This creates a high proportion of blacks unprepared to compete for jobs in today's economy, where middle-class industrial work for unskilled laborers has largely disappeared.

The drug epidemic sent disproportionate numbers of black men to prison, and crushed the job opportunities for those who served their time. Women don't want to marry men who can't provide for their families, and welfare laws created a financial incentive for poor mothers to stay single.

If you remove these inequalities, some say, the 72 percent will decrease.

"It's all connected. The question should be, how has the black family survived at all?" says Maria Kefalas, co-author of "Promises I Can Keep: Why Poor Women Put Motherhood Before Marriage."

The book is based on interviews with 162 low-income single mothers. One of its conclusions is that these women see motherhood as one of life's most fulfilling roles — a rare opportunity for love and joy, husband or no husband.

'My children are what keep me going'
Sitting in Carroll's waiting room, Sherhonda Mouton watches all the babies with the tender expression of a first-time mother, even though she's about to have her fourth child. Inside her purse is a datebook containing a handwritten ode to her children, titled "One and Only." It concludes:

"You make the hardest tasks seem light with everything you do.

"How blessed I am, how thankful for my one and only you."

Mouton, 30, works full time as a fast-food manager on the 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift. She's starting classes to become a food inspector.

"My children are what keep me going, every day," she says. "They give me a lot of hope and encouragement."

Highschool dropout rates have nothing to do with this thread. ( BTW high school dropout rates are a terrible indicator considering they are calculated differently by cities , counties and states. Anyone who wants to look more into this should check out the "silent epidemic". Children born outta wedlock is actually decreasing in the black community. It used to be above 80% , now it's 73%. While the number is increasing amongst white and Hispanic women. ) Once again though all of these are random "facts" that arent germane to this topic. The thread isn't about these items or whether Dominicans identify with being black or whether ninjahood likes to hear himself talk. It's about media portrayals of blacks. I understand outside factors play roles in the discussion. TV ratings are irrelevant. The discussion isn't about what news station is the most watched. It's about HOW THE MEDIA PORTRAYS AFRICAN AMERICANS .

Let that man do him. If he enjoys spending his Sunday pointing out "flaws" in a group he doesn't identify with so be it. * shrugs* the back and forth is useless. No one is going to change his ideology. Instead lets just discuss the topic and ignore the attempts to misdirect the conversation.

Interesting article. Let's touch on this point a little more....

Also no mention of the disparity in prison occupancy vs. illegal drug use. If non blacks sell/use MORE, then why do black males represent a higher percentage of the prison population?
