How doesn't drop until 10Am pacific
GGhorn still shining on them out thereAfter seeing a previous post talking about efficiently using the Scorch Cannon, I've spent a little time looking into damage values on the Scorch Cannon and thought y'all might find it interesting/helpful for Prison of Elders (PoE) coming out later today.
I haven't seen tabulated damage values posted so the goal of this post is more so to give some numbers/percentages to the Scorch Cannon to further confirm what we already know - charging the Cannon is certainly better than not. But how much more so, in general terms, beyond "It does 11K damage!"?
I'm more than open to criticism and other numbers y'all are ready to throw out.
TL;DR
- First tier (2.5 seconds) charge increases base damage by 125% (2.25x).
- Second tier (5 seconds) damage increases base damage by 250% (3.5x).
- No damage increase beyond base if stuck to an enemy and exploded before first tier vs simply shooting with no charge.
- No further damage increase if the sticky auto-explodes (10 seconds) vs releasing after second increase at 5 seconds, so there’s no reason to hold it down further past the second tier except for periodically causing the enemy to duck as if you’d tossed a grenade.
- The Scorch Cannon has ~3x as much damage potential when charged up to the second tier for each shot.
As you're probably well aware, you can charge the cannon's shell to increase both blast radius and damage.Tiers of Damage/Nomenclature
- Burst Fire - You've fired, but you didn't hold the trigger down. Explodes on contact for base damage.
- First Tier - Occurs 2.5 seconds after firing. Glow size increases, indicating a boost to damage (2.25 * Base) and blast radius.
- Second Tier - Occurs 5 seconds after firing. Glow size increases twice, indicating a second boost to damage (3.5 * Base) and blast radius.
- Auto-Explode – Occurs 10 seconds after firing. You've gone and got greedy and kept holding down that trigger. No worries - it just explodes on it's own. Indicated by a beeping klaxon. Same damage as Second Tier charge.
The Scorch Cannon (SC) can be fired at approximately one shot per second when burst firing. Firing and waiting for first tier damage tends towards one shot per 3.5 seconds. Waiting for second tier damage provides roughly one shot per 7 seconds.Rate of Fire
So the SC can be emptied in about 10 second with no charge, 35 seconds for tier 1 damage, and 70 seconds for tier 2 damage if all shots are homogeneous. Waiting for the shells to auto-explode takes around 10 seconds per shell, hitting 100 seconds to empty the clip.
While the SC has great crowd control potential, this was not very consistent to test easily at the moment. As such, I'll be focusing on single enemy damage for now. Going down that path, we probably care more about Majors and Ultras rather than trash mobs.Test Subjects
I recorded damage against several types of consistently spawning enemies/story bosses, but below is a summary a few as all pretty much gave the same indication in terms of damage increase/DPS.
Fallen Reaver Captain
Located in Ember Caves, near the entrance to Winter's Lair. I list this one first as an good example of the damage increases/percentages, since I have visuals for all tiers listed above.
"% Increase over Base" is the amount above a simple trigger pull damage is increased by charging. "Damage Potential" is the amount of damage that could be dealt if all 10 shots were fired at the referenced charge tier.
While Auto-Explode and Tier 2 have the same damage potential and per shot damage, bear in mind Tier 2 takes about half the time to fire. There's really no reason to keep holding the trigger other than the satisfying klaxon.[th=""]Reaver Captain[/th][th=""] Single Shot [/th][th=""] First Tier Damage [/th][th=""] Second Tier Damage [/th][th=""] Auto-Explode [/th]
Impact 291 291 291 291 Explosive 1,548 3,283 5,418 5,418 % Increase over Base 0% 125% 250% 250% Damage Potential (10 Shots) 18,390 37,740 57,090 57,090
As a bonus to this, it can be shown that sticking and allowing the shot to charge for less than the time it takes to get to tier one (no glow radius increase) deals no additional damage over simply doing a single shot with no charge.
Simiks-3
In "The Archive" story mission. I throw this one out first because he's a Major, probably much like the ones we'll run into in PoE. I'll omit the Auto-Explode values, as it can be shown to be identical to Second Tier damage.
You might ask why damage to Simiks-3, a level 30 enemy, was higher than that to the Reaver Captain level 11. I suspect this is due to how our Guardians are scaled down to meet Patrol enemy levels.[th=""]Simiks-3[/th][th=""] Single Shot [/th][th=""] First Tier Damage [/th][th=""]Second Tier Damage[/th]
Impact 611 611 611 Explosive 3,259 7,331 11,404 % Increase over Base 0% 125% 250% Damage Potential (10 Shots) 38,700 79,420 120,175 You can basically empty the clip out for X amount of damage in around 10 seconds by just firing or stagger and charge your shots for as much as 3 times more damage per cannon, albiet over a longer period of time. Don't rush to empty the thing out and milk it for all the damage you can get. The SC is a great weapon for fights where the target is not time constrained, but heavy ammo still wins when it comes to burst damage against a single target. In Conclusion... (Didn't we already know this? Well... yes.)
As a last caveat with a visual, it takes one single shot + one tier one charge to take out Simiks-3 on a Heroic level 30 mission versus a little more than a single Gjallarhorn shell.
This stuff is insane to me.Currently I have:
And then I have all factions edged up for all my 3 characters, so that means once the DLC drops, these packages will contain new HoW gear:
- 66 Dead Orbit Packages
- 6 Cryptarch Packages
- 1 New Monarchy Package
- 1 Crucible Package
- 1 Primary Weapon Legendary Engram
- 3 Special Weapon Legendary Engrams
- 5 Heavy Weapon Legendary Engrams
- 8 Helmet Legendary Engrams
- 2 Gauntlet Legendary Engrams
- 4 Chestplate Legendary Engrams
- 2 Boot Legendary Engrams
In addition to these, I have
- 3 Vanguard Packages
- 3 Crucible Packages
- 3 New Monarchy Packages
- 3 Dead Orbit Packages
- 3 Future War Cult Packages
- 3 Cryptarch Packages
Each one is worth 250 Reputation but with Nightfall XP Bonus, comes out to 312 Reputation each, so that means i’ve got 13,104 Reputation, waiting to be allocated, which means 5 more ranks in a faction of my choice, hence
- 42 Vanguard/Crucible commendations
In the process of opening 20 Dead orbit packages per character, wearing the D.O. Class item means I get 125 Reputation per package opened, meaning I’ve got 2500 Rep per Character going right back into Dead Orbit for another
- 5 Dead Orbit packages
- 3 Dead Orbit Packages
this is that pain that i dont want to feel. this is why i didnt farm for hours this weekend lol
Farmed for 5.5 hrs last night. 0 Keys. Literally every member of my fireteam cooked. Wright, Biggie, Prom, Frost, Bos all got keys. I got two legendary engrams.
Will be on right after I get off work and going in after that. PoE tonight.
I didn't either. Just signed on last night and went at it. Kinda wish I did though. Even just that small slither of farming renewed an excitement that I haven't felt in Destiny since the VoG opened up and we were just Kinderguardians like, "So we gotta stand on these plates and the door opens?!"this is that pain that i dont want to feel. this is why i didnt farm for hours this weekend lol
