Hot water may shrink your clothes, and it can deteriorate certain materials over time.
Most of my clothes are expensive, so I wash them cold. Just to keep the gym clothes lasting longer I wash everything in cold water, sometimes warm.

The drying part is the key - putting it in the dryer can ruin your clothes. Hang dry it.
