my nyc people ride hard..lol

Not sure why there is a debate.. each big city has its plus and minuses. They all go through stages of Ups and downs in terms of attraction advertisement and culture changes. But one thing that remains is that they are all dope in its own way ,but NYC > ALL

How true is this? If so, I mess with you NY dudes. :smokin

Besides Queens. Mediocre rappers and weirdos are a no-go for me.

If we talking about assets...yes.
A lot of old folks who bought them brownstones when they were dirt cheap in the 70s and 80s is sitting on a goldmine right now.

And you're from Jersey..the only good thing to come outta there was Naughty by Nature and Redman. Have a seat big man
Queens raised NaS da Gawd. That's more than enough reason to bow down and kiss the rings

that number is off. It's more like 1 in 500 if you include all boros and I'm being generous

and I had enough of this Jersey slander b. Naughty and Red arent the only good thing to come from the Garden State. You forgot Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Queen Latifah and there more I havent mentioned yet. Lots of legends came out Jerz, do ya homework b.

One of Sinatra's biggest songs is about NY though...

underlined for emphasis. not just brownstones tho, you'd be surprised what can sell for a cool million in nyc, in the right neighborhood. if anything i'd wager brownstones, especially renovated/finished ones can clear a breezy 1.5.

ny is the melting pot ethnically and economically. you could ride the F train, be an avg looking person, and have a milli or more in assets (property, etc) and you could be right next to someone who looks just as typical, but lives in a homeless shelter. and i feel this applies beyond racial lines in the city.

this probably underlines the struggle to survive in nyc and the growing issue of widening economic gap within the city population. and as real estate booms in nyc, the problem unfortunately is getting worse.

what was that figure to live comfortably in nyc...$140k? give or take depending on boro? :nerd:

I was just discussing this with one of my professors in graduate studies for transportation engineering. I'm developing a mathematical model to determine a modal split from one OD. Using three modes( auto, light rail, and bus). Using a constant parameter and different income levels.

My model determined that at a certain income level, a greater percentage of people completely abandoned public transportation, and headed towards automobile transportation (basically they valued their time more than the difference in cost). I still have to tweak it a bit, though, but it's been coming along.

However, if I proposed this same model, say using the train from jersey to NYC, it would be nearly impossible to determine at what Income level people would prefer an automobile over the subway, since as you mentioned, the people in there can range from millionaires to homeless.

Very interesting to say the least, and I certainly respect NYC in the economic aspect. However, I would never live there. Even if I bought a condo there, it would just be sort of a weekend thing.

first of all

from a fellow engineer. now i see how u get that STI $$ lol

second, how can that be? if someone drives, then the increased cost is gonna be with parking, but the inconvenience will skyrocket. youll have to keep paying a meter, or pay a really high amount everyday at a garage. plus there is traffic. so depending on where u go, driving may not even be worth it time wise. and if you are coming from long island, the railroad won't be seeing that manhattan bound traffic.

cool model tho!. you should make a model to see what road project can alleviate traffic congestion in the worst cities, that would be something i'd be interesting in knowing.

My model consists of dealing with collected data specific to in-vehicle travel time, access time, wait time, out-of-pocket cost. So, even if the cost of owning your vehicle and traveling on one O-D is significantly higher than public trans, at a certain income level, a higher percentage of people still chose private transportation. It's what the numbers show, backed up with personal collected data and the U.S. Census data.

This isn't that specific model you're talking about. It's a mathematical model. Showing how a proposed traffic design may alleviate congestion can easily be done with graphical modeling, using programs such as HCS, VISSIM, etc. So, that is actually much more simple, and these programs will simulate exactly how the traffic will behave according to the data you've provided on existing conditions, and what your proposed design is/was implemented into the program.

gotcha...interesting and surprising.
