I'll never use the word BBQ in that sense.
It's a cookout.

I know I have been invited to BBQs where not a single grill was fired up and all the food was cooked inside and then brought outside.

I have too much respect for the act of BBQing for me to call my burgers and glizzies off the grill “BBQing”. To me, I’ve always said “I’m grilling”.
If someone says they’re BBQing or having a BBQ, I’m expecting slow cooked ribs, brisket, etc.
