Gov. Rauner Drinks Chocolate Milk to Demonstrate His Commitment to Diversity

In an awkward onstage appearance this week, Gov. Bruce Rauner drank a glass of chocolate milk to demonstrate his belief in diversity.

“It’s really, really good,” Rauner said after taking a sip of the sugary drink. “Diversity!”

The clunky corporate metaphor was the brainchild of Hyatt Hotels diversity and inclusion executive Tyronne Stoudemire, who appeared alongside Rauner on Wednesday at the downtown Chicago Thompson Center to discuss workplace diversity at a Black History Month event.

Enlisting Rauner as his lanky magician’s assistant, Stoudemire, who is black, poured a glass of milk to represent the white men who lead most organizations (including, um, the state of Illinois).

“This chocolate syrup represents diversity,” Stoudemire said, before squirting a healthy dash of brown syrup that immediately sank to the bottom of the glass.

“When you look at most organizations, diversity sits at the bottom of the organization,” Stoudemire continued. “You don’t get inclusion until you actually stir it up.”

Rauner then stirred the syrup into the milk, turning it brown, and he took a sip and pronounced it good.

“Diversity is the mix, and inclusion is making the mix work,” Stoudemire said, concluding his analogy.

Stoudemire told Chicago Inc. he’s been using the chocolate milk stunt for 16 years as a simple way to illustrate the lack of diversity at the top of Fortune 500 companies. He typically picks on the most powerful person in the room to be his assistant, he said, adding that Rauner “didn’t know what he was getting into.”

He declined to comment on Rauner’s efforts to improve diversity in Illinois government, but said, “I give him credit for his willingness to step up and put himself out there … he could have said, ‘No.’ ”

Rauner’s spokeswoman Rachel Bold did not respond directly when asked whether Rauner was embarrassed by the stunt, but wrote in a statement, ”This was the event moderator’s example of diversity that an audience of all ages could see and understand. It was one of two demonstrations at the event, both of which received ovations from the crowd.”

Exactly. What's most bizarre to me is how they honor it like some godly beings wrote it with lightening onto the mountaintops. We need a movie depicting the TRUE origins of America, three stealing of land, the murder, the rape, the torture, the slavery. ALL of it. Seeing it will humble lots of people.

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier this month, Russian bobsled pilot Nadezhda Sergeeva said other Olympic athletes had warmed to her once she had been allowed to compete in this year’s PyeongChang Winter Games by the International Olympic Committee. During the interview she was wearing a shirt that read, “I Don’t Do Doping.”

On Friday, Russian bobsled officials confirmed to the AP that Sergeeva had failed a doping test.

Sergeeva was one of the 168 Russian athletes who were specifically vetted before the Games by the IOC, which had banned Russia’s Olympic federation from PyeongChang over past doping sins but allowed the preapproved Russian athletes to compete under the Olympic Athletes From Russia moniker. She’s now the second Russian athlete — and just the fourth athlete overall — to fail a doping test at these Olympics, joining curler Alexander Krushelnitsky, who tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

According to the AP, Sergeeva tested positive Sunday for trimetazdine, a medication used for angina that has been banned because of its effects on metabolism. The president of the Russian Bobsled Federation says she denies taking the substance and that her initial drug test at the Games came back clean.

“She confirms she took no such medication and the team confirms she was not issued any medication,” Alexander Zubkov told the AP. “Federation representatives at the Olympics” are starting to prepare a defense, he said.

“I can tell you that on the 13th it was clean, but on the 18th it gave a positive result for the heart medication,” he said.

The positive test comes at the worst possible time for Russia. On Saturday, the IOC’s executive board will decide whether to reinstate the country for Sunday’s Closing Ceremonies.

“This won’t win us any extra credit,” Russian delegation leader Stanislav Pozdnyakov told members of that country’s media, per the AP. “Unfortunately this case speaks to negligence by the athlete. She has let us down.”

On Wednesday, three days after she had given the sample that tested positive, Sergeeva’s sled finished 12th in the bobsled competition.
