In the Golden State, any driver with a brand-new car is granted six months to attach a licence plate to the vehicle. But Jobs, rather than associate his identity with a numbered plate, opted to simply lease a new car every six months.

That’s the story told by Jon Callas, CTO of Entrust. Callas previously worked at Apple in various senior security roles and so was probably privy to some inside info.

ITWire’s David Heath explains further:

“Jobs made an arrangement with the leasing company; he would always change cars during the sixth month of the lease, exchanging one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for another identical one. At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months, and thus there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted.

/\ shuddup, ur obv not familiar with cupertino... haha sl55 is average wheels around those parts, them silicon valley boys ridin around in astons, maybachs,bentleys,lambos, etc

ppl that knew his whereabouts would know it was him but the regular joe would jus think its someone from the nieghborhood

if you have the money, you can afford to pay a car note all the time and have a new car every 6 months and not worry about anything.

people with real quap do this...............no point in buying a car unless its of some type of value to you personally.

You guys will slurp Jobs over anything. Adam Carolla's been doing this for years and talks about it all the time. He never takes the dealer plates off his leased cars.

Naw Im saying because of course people talk. Everyone probably spread the gossip Steve Jobs drives this and this with no license plate.

Ofcourse he stop at places around town and people noticed him

To be honest that sounds ridiculous. I'd much rather just have a license plate and not have to lease a new car every 6 months. What is so great about having no license plate? You're telling me he can't afford to pay parking tickets?

It actually makes no difference to the consumer. 
You drive your car on the daily, and on the 6th month (when you're making Jobs' kind of money) they come to your house with a new one, and take the old one).
