Before the flames come in...yes I know he has 9 rings and has numerous records in the playoffs that are flat out ridiculous. 40somethin and 0 when his teamwins Game 1, stuff like that.

HOWEVER,

if you look at his recent track record, it hasn't been so pretty.

Blown out by Detroit in 5 in 2004 when his Laker team was heavily favored.

Clearly outcoached by Doc in the finals last year. Every move Doc made in that series worked out, Phil not so much.

I never thought of Phil as that great of an X's and O's coach, but his greatest strength was his ability to get through to his players, especially thesuperstars, and bring out the best in them.

Before in the Jordan and Shaq dynasties, seems like he would always press the right buttons, and always make the necessary adjustments to win. Effort and heartwere never in question.

But in recent years, seems like he's lost his touch a little bit. When a team doesn't play hard, how much of that is the coaches fault? When your teamdoesn't even show up for not one, but two games in a playoff series, how much of the blame should be placed on the coach? Personally, if I was the coachand saw some of my players playing lackadaisical I would bench them immediately and get someone in there that wants to win.

It seems like because Phil has 9 rings and is arguably the most successful coach in history, he gets a pass for his recent failures. People like to blame thedivision between Kobe and Shaq for the failure in 2004, no one talks about how Larry Brown flat out out-coached him. Or people blame the absence of Bynum orthe lack of toughness for the failure last year, but it was clear that boston adjusted to LA much better than LA adjusted to boston. Boston had an answer forkobe, while LA never had an answer for Pierce.

People will point to Kobe and say what has he done without Shaq? But what has Phil done when he hasn't had the 2 most dominant players in the past 20 yearson his team? Before, Phil would win a title every year he coached....its been 5 (going on 6) years since he's last won a title, despite some very goodteams.

so is he supposed to win every year? the guy is not overrated.... give credit to the other teams and players that were able to beat them....

I think he is. Yes he won a bunch of titles....but how could he not with jordan in his prime? How could not win a ring with shaq in his prime and accompaniedby kobe?

To me he's always been a chemistry guy more than an X/O or adjustments or motivation guy. If you have the talent and motivation but lack the chemistry,he's your man. But if you lack the talent, or the motivation, or don't have players that can run the triangle without X/Os to guide them, he's notreally going to do much for you. Not to say he's a bad coach, because obviously others can't do what he does.

people sometimes forget that allgood team font win championships

I think in Chicago and LA it was mostly about being in the right place at the right time. He's a good coach but if you put other coaches in the same spotsI'm sure they would have won too with Shaq/Kobe and Jordan/Pippen leading the squads.

Having 9 rings will NEVER make you overrated....

@ anyone even entertaining this kind of thought:

I mean #!#%...dude knew how to get the best out of his players...micro-managinig the egos of Pip, Rodman, Shaq, Kobe, Mike, etc etc will not work with 99.9% ofall coaches in the nba...some of yall make it seem like you could plug Lawrence Frank into Phil's role, and he'd have the same results. Phil is amaster motivator...and for all of you questioning the way he does his X's & O's, how about him getting some credit for implementing the triangle(props also to Tex), and having that particular offense be dominant?

If you're going to question a legend like Phil being "overrated," then who's next??? Bill Russell? If guys like Phil can't win or get anysort of credit in the eyes of folks (here on NT), then no one will....

no, I think hes a master at bringing out the best in players. Also the best in realizing who has potential to lead a team to championships.Hell, I even believeif phil were the coach of the magic right now, hed win a championship with them.

Man some of you guys are funny...
You're comparing Larry Brown to Phil

Larry Brown calls out to hisplayers through the media and it's the only way he can get to them!!!

Phil is a man with few words, he'll lead you to the open door but trust that you have the right judgment and strength to walk into it and come out like achampion...

he definitely has fallen off BIGGG TIMMEEEEE

DID YOU WATCH LAST NIGHTS GAME (GAME 2, LA/DEN) THE GUY MADE THE WORST SUBSTITUTIONS AND THE WORST PLAY CALLING DOWN THE STRETCH.

All I'm going to put into this subject is, if Phil weren't so picky on who and when he coached, he wouldn't be as prestigious a coach.

You can say that he can manage egos and control teams, but really, he's only coached ONE season without a player not named Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.

I'd just love to see how he'd fair coaching a rebuilding team without a superstar. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, he's a greatcoach, but people used to think Don Nelson was a good coach, ehhh.

i dont think he's overrated..i will say this i would like to see how he would do with not so great players e.g. michael jordan, scottie pippen, kobebryant, and shaq. along with a lot of great role players...phil has been very fortunate to had have a lot of great players in his coaching career

Yes heck give Jeff Van Gundy or Rudy T those Bulls and Lakers teams and they would have the same amount of championships. He is losing his touch a bit.

Not overrated, just past his prime. Like someone else said, he's stubborn. Doesn't wanna change with thetimes...

Luckily we only have one more season with him before he retires...
