Jay Z says 'My presence is charity', compares self to Obama in response to Harry Belafonte's critici

Yes we know organized religion has been detrimental since integration, but it's also been stated that during the civil rights era it was pivotal in change. Then again during civil rights the was more unity and group think in all facets of the community. I don't see where this enters in when speaking about Jay tho.

The point being missed here isn't where Jay-z is putting his dough.

Belafonte wanted him to be more vocal. Which is where Springsteen comparison came form. If you decipher his lyrics he has gems here and there. But he doesn't speak out on social injustice frequently or on any platform. And as I've said Jay is a quiet cat when it comes to that. That just ain't him. Which is understandable. And I'm sure his contributions on the low are appreciated by many.

Belafonte comes from an era were folks with were vocal (obviously out of necessity) that's what got things done. I see why Jay is miffed with him just putting him out there in the media. It could be construed as an unfair criticism for a guy who was/is shy on stuff. But he is kinda right here.
true... but outside looking in lets say im in need...be it fair housing/money for college... Not that I would ish on inspirational words or the vocal chants and hoorays.. but actually provided me with fair housing and a means to college would benefit me more.

Basically in that era... they used their message and their voice because that's all they had to invoke changes by others.

Todays era ppl use their wallets/fame to invoke change make a difference.

Try to dim your lights tell you be humble

Let's be real. If Jay-Z shows up just about anywhere. People will lose their minds. He's that big of an entertainer. His statement is 100% truth.

He' not obligated to be a "role model" but at da end

Of da day, that void of acknowledging social issues

Of his music always held it from being as powerful

As some of da stuff on others catalog.

Its w/e though.

When are you going to stop posting in stanzas brah?

going to read this entire thread tomorrow

Bruh you have not read through this thread at all.

It's been proven that Jay Z has given back a lot.

He has a scholarship fund.

He set up a trust fund for Sean Bell's daughter and paid his fiancée.

He set up a clean water project in Africa.

He's renovated gyms across the country for the Boys and Girls Club.

That's only some of what he's done.

The fact that you dont think he has given anything back is a belief you have that is false.
You must not have read the OP, because this thread is about his response to Belafonte's accsation. Which smelled like entitlement to me.

He feels like his presence is charity because of his importance to kids around Trayvon martins age. RIP Trayvon.

Yeah Jay-Z sounded like an arrogant prick. How you gonna compare yourself to the president?

Amazes me how rappers always reach to compare themselves to someone else, especially gangsters  :smh:

Scarface
Yo Gotti
Gambino
Capone
50 cent
Kool G Rap
French Montana
........and on and on

Pathetic.

1. Harry Belafonte gives money to black people. Jay Z takes money from black people. When it comes to philanthropic endeavors that have benefited the black community, Belafonte's contributions are too numerous to list. A brief overview includes helping to financially support the family of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  while King was a struggling pastor and up-and-coming civil rights icon, and helping to bail King out of jail following his arrest in Alabama. Belafonte also helped fund the Freedom Rides. Yep. That means if you are black and reading this article from an integrated location somewhere in the South, you owe Harry Belafonte a big old "thank you." (The Root)

As far as Jay Z (birth name Shawn Carter), here's an analysis of his charitable giving by one outlet: In 2010, Jay-Z only reportedly donated $6,431 of his $63 million earnings to his own Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, and Beyonce is being drawn into the mix too. Out of the $87 million she earned in 2010, not a single penny went to her husband's foundation. According to Jay-Z's representative, Jana Fleishman: "Jay, along with his family, provided office support, overhead support, Mrs. Gloria Carter's 100 percent effort and time [his mother], computers, FedEx expenses, accounting, and treasury function support," she wrote in an email to The D

"This was at no cost to the charity." But that office support didn't add up to much that year. According to tax records, $1,209 was spent on office expenses, $1,401 for the telephone, and $4,696 for other expenses. Of the three charitable donations that were given to the Shawn Carter Fund that year, which totaled $218,849, Jay's was the smallest. (The Root)

how is making good music and getting people to by your album "taking money" from people

Basically he does feel like he has to put himself out there. The same way MJ caught flak for not doing or saying enough. Welcome to fame and wealth.

Such a foolish comment by Shawn Carter. Ultimately what he chooses to do with his money is his business and he isn't obligated.

With that said, his comment of "Presence is a charity" is laughable. He really is delusional. As talented as he is, he is very overrated and not anywhere near as intelligent as people think he is. He is accessible to white america because of his wife, being married to Beyonce, white america will embrace you as a black royalty. With expectations like that, of course he is gonna fail and look like a fool. In all honesty, he is just an above average rapper who is past his prime, had his career and relevance prolonged by Kanye, and owes much of his celebrity to his wife. He is in no way shape or form a great businessman.

Agree with a lot of what you said up until this part
