Jordan Brand Donates $500,000 to Boys and Girls Club in Louisiana

Jordan Brand, a division of Nike, Inc., announced today a donation of $500,000 to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana's Slidell Unit,to help build a new athletic gymnasium. Basketball legend, Michael Jordan and All-Stars Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul joined more than 250 community leadersand New Orleans-area youth for the official dedication and check presentation ceremony. The donation will go towards the construction of a state-of-the-artgymnasium named after Jordan Brand complete with a professional basketball court, scoreboard and bleachers to be used by the kids of the Boys & Girls Cluband other related community events. "On behalf of the people of Slidell and the parish of St. Tammany Parish, we'd like to thank the Jordan Brand fortheir generous contribution," said Johnny DiBartolo, president, Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana. "With significant donations frompartners like Jordan Brand, we are confident that the Slidell Boys and Girls Club will help our children continue to grow, learn, develop and improve theirlives and surroundings." The Slidell Boys & Girls Club was one of 16 Gulf region Boys & Girls Clubs damaged in Hurricane Katrina. The location wascompletely gutted and the facilities were in ruins. The rebuilding of the facility serves as a testament to the dedication of many contributions and countlessvolunteer hours to restore it in honor of the Boys & Girls Club. The Jordan Brand gymnasium will serve as a brick-and-mortar reminder of the contributionsand volunteer hours spent rebuilding the facility that has helped and will continue improve the lives of children and families of Slidell. "The Boys andGirls Clubs of America has been a visible contributor to the families and children of New Orleans, during and post Hurricane Katrina," said MichaelJordan. "Slidell is a community that has been somewhat overlooked in recovery efforts and we are proud to aid with its rebuilding and leave a lastinglegacy for the community." Michael Jordan and some Team Jordan athletes have a special connection to the Boys and Girls Club of America as some were oncemembers and now continue to be involved with the organization in their respective hometowns and communities. Jordan Brand believes that physical activity playsa vital role in building character in youth, and the donation is dedicated to the children of the greater New Orleans area to inspire them to commit themselvesto hard work in life and athletics in order to achieve their dreamed goals. In 2006, Jordan Brand donated $450,000 to Habitat for Humanity to aid in therebuilding efforts in Louisiana. By auctioning off 21 pairs of Michael Jordan autographed AIR JORDAN shoes to raise the funds, the money helped rebuild homesin the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. As much as I want to see improved build and material quality, it's not like Jordan brand was short on money - just commitment.

This is the type of move we need to see more of from them. Their commitment to social responsibility has been anemic thus far and has failed to truly growalong with the brand's profits. It's nice to see, for once, a substantial financial donation paid for by the brand itself, as opposed to the habitatfor humanity auction, which relied on bidders to do all the heavy lifting as they spat out a few retro shoes, autographed them, and let a third party handlethe details. Now, it's fine if you want to be active in charitable fundraising, and certainly they could do more in that regard, but this is the type ofdonation I'd like to see more of. Ideally, the brand's consumers could walk away from each purchase comfortable in the knowledge that they'resupporting a socially responsible company. They're not there yet, but this is an important step in that direction. It's nice to see a markedimprovement in their commitment relative to years past.

Great job.

Not really because they already have record profits year after year. If they made "better quality" (thicker leather and so on) all that would dofor them is drive up materials prices which in turn would bring their profits down making them have less money to donate.

They are in business for one thing, to make money, PERIOD!!! And they are doing a damn good job at it!!! Us, the collectors, who pick apart the shoes and aresuper critical of them make up a small percentage of actual JB business. The fact is the team line and appearal make way more money for JB then the Air Jordansignature shoes do and yes that includes retros!!! If they completely stopped making the Air Jordan line after the 23's and never made another retro again, yes they would take a hit in their profits but they would still continue to make alot of money every year and continue staying in business!!! As sad it mayseem to "us", the average everyday consumer only cares about one thing... that the item they buy has a Jumpman on it!!!

I agree with Meth, I think JB is doing a great job with this donation.....being a former resident of New Orleans and with the NBA All Star Weekend coming, this will show a tremendous impact to the community.....thanks for posting pics dyyhard

Seconded. Let's all trip over ourselves congratulating a company that makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year - from outsourcing labor to third worldcountries where the employees are de-facto slaves or children or both, from cost cutting w/r/t materials and craftsmanship, from overcharging drastically - fordonating half of one million for a gym.

And, of course, they made it a huge publicity event, stamped the J logo all over it so kids that can't afford to play in gyms will want to spend whatlittle money they have on overpriced shoes... real philanthropic, J.
