Some guy on Reddit broke IT down pretty well...so the reason keith lee got buried in wwe is because he wont sign over rights to his real name? how does that even work? or do they just want him to change his name so they can own his likeness and character?
It's for the purposes of merchandising and licensing for the period of Keith Lee being under contract to WWE. It has nothing to do with WWE owning his real name.
This has gone on literally for as long as WWE has been in business. If Keith Lee were to leave WWE, there's nothing WWE could do to stop him from using his real name, even if they wanted to.
Whether it involves Keith Lee trademarking his own name and then licensing it out to WWE, or him signing the rights of his name over to WWE for the life of the contract, is all this is about.
It's to make sure that no other promotion or person can file a "Keith Lee" trademark in the context of wrestling and exploit it so that neither Keith Lee or WWE can make money off it.
Right now, the Washington Football Team is looking into changing their name, but they ran into the issue of some guy, knowing the name change issues were coming to a head, going out and trademarking a bunch of potential name changes and making merchandise so he could show he was attempting to make a profit off them.
Trademark law is absurdly complex and complicated and has its own wing of study, which is why when WWE talent usually sign their contracts, they license their real name or stage name to WWE and WWE does all the legwork and paperwork because they have a whole legal department that does this.
It would be for a wrestling context, perhaps more broader entertainment as well, but WWE wouldn't be bothered (and couldn't do much about) a guy named Keith Lee starting something like "Keith Lee's Burgers" and trademarking it because it's two distinct industries. The USPTO tries to prevent "confusingly similar" trademarks in the same industry.
