Waits for "it's not his fault. He didn't know any better. Blame society for putting him in that situation"

I been in vegas too long and I don't even snowboard anymore so big jackets aren't on the radar.

in NYC it rarely gets cold enough to justify a North Face snorkel, nevermind the "biggie" or canada goose joints. one winter i had a NF snorkel, sweated my balls off in the train. i'd rather layer up

Yeah Canada Goose is on the rise out here

Don't even care about coats anymore, just been layering up

im asking what is the fascination that people have with jackets designed for temperatures and conditions that NYC does not experience...

...aren't they are designed for Arctic circle research missions or moutain climbing in the himalayas, type stuff?...

...if its just how NYCers do well more power to them, i guess
Store employees noted that some bought the coat for its big pockets — to stash guns and drugs in.
The Marmot Mammoth Jacket is filled with down, has a zip-off hood and boasts lots of pockets — all for about $700 or $800. It's also a status symbol among teens in New York, leading to shootings like the one in Bryant Park on Saturday.
Picture a drug dealer or gang member walks into a store and is looking for a coat with big pockets to stash stuff, warm, and price doesn't matter. The store employee is going to point them in the direction of the most expensive coat they can sell that matches the description.

Now once a few notorious drug dealer or gang members even dudes pitching dimes on the corner get the coat and the young kids see them wearing it they see it as a status symbol because they look up to the drug dealers or gang members that are getting all the money and girls. They want to be like them.

So even if you don't sell drugs, gang bang, or do other illegal stuff for fast money you can put up the tough gangster facade if you have this coat. This is what a lot of rappers who are not "about that life" do with a lot of gear/kicks/jewelry/etc.... Then the rappers start talking about it in their songs, mention it here and there and these trend spreads further to the young impressionable kids willing to do anything, even kill, to have this coat/kicks and be cool.

Really, all hood gear can be traced back to the corner boys and bigger drug dealers who always had the money to buy this stuff and flaunt it. Hood materialism and hype based on d boy specs. Certain things become entrenched in hood culture and just become staples. Look at Pelle Pelle, Champion, etc... Just ask ninjahood

It's a trap if you ask me. Won't deny it's good quality gear. The killing is senseless though.

Also, the crazy thing about this is where it happened, not that it happened. That's why people just go to Central Park and pay to skate. These young cats ain't paying $18 to skate on the weekend and they know it. Better than having to deal with the riff raff that comes with hanging around Times Square. They would get stopped wandering around Central Park much less Park Avenue.

Dude didn't even have the burner on him when he first approached the person who was wearing the coat. He left and came back. I don't know about you, but if someone pressed me like that, I'm not hanging around in the case that he comes back. Kid was brazen enough to attempt to run his coat while he was on line. It's going to be a long time before he sees freedom. Forget the fact that he had illegal possession of a firearm, someone was paralyzed because of his reckless act. Judge is going to throw the book at him.

i swear, as far as fashion goes, hoods in nyc are bizarro world.

i wouldnt wear one of those coats for free.

i have no idea what the hell the big deal is.

I'm from NYC and I agree with you on this. Things have gone comepletely left with the sytles. I've never heard of that brand of jacket, but just looking at it without know the price I would never think of wearing it. To see these kids wearing those ugly *** jackets and knowing how much they cost is blowing my mind. :{

look at Carhartt, one of da execs was quoted in da NY times for saying his jackets got popping in da hiphop community cuz all da crack dealers were rocking em.

I feel awful for the kids getting killed/shot over this...but I gotta question the priorities of the parents. There is no way you can rationalize an early-teen rocking a $600+ jacket. Especially w/ it being so hot on the streets. :{ It's really a shame.

Maybe they didn't know it was hot in the streets? I honestly don't see the appeal of the jacket posted. I understand it's warm but so are a bunch of other jackets

I don't see the appeal either...but strictly speaking from how I was raised, my folks would never buy me a jacket that expensive or let me wear one. Especially with it being something that other people will rob/kill over.

My brother got his for $300 out of season when he was in high school. Everyone isn't dropping $6-700 for these. Media is sensationalizing it to an extent which fuels the hate posts in the comment section.

Crazy that it happened in Midtown Manhattan of all NYC areas.

Coat is ugly as sin. Of all the more mainstream brands, as Euro-tacky as they are, I'd rather rock Moncler.

Bryant Park skating rink shooting suspect smiles as he's led out of Midtown police station
'F--k all you ******!' - Shooting suspect Corey Dunton spat profanity and racial slurs at a Daily News reporter as detectives escorted him from the station house. He was ordered held in protective custody without bail at his arraignment.

:{ and tax dollars will be wasted "rehabilitating" this fool in jail.

I had no clue. I was just going off of what I read.

The shooter should be held in jail, along and his parents/parent should be held accountable too.

I swear the legal system is so ******g flawed. Why waste time on someone like him? He is 16 yrs old shows absolutely no remorse for what he did, he is way past rehabilitation. Just end his life and move on, jail is only going to make him harder and more indifferent.
