The NBA players, media, and grievance mongers such as Al Sharpton are up in arms over vile L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s alleged racist remarks. But NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar today said a pox on both your houses  – calling out the hypocrisy behind the whole affair and presenting by far the most rounded  – and surprisingly libertarian — view thus far.
Abdul-Jabbar, in an op-ed piece in TIME attacked the collective outrage emanating from America’s media over Sterling’s aremarks to his girlfriend, calling the publication of a private conversation “sleazy” and wondering why earlier, more public manifestations of racism failed to shock those such as Al Sharpton, and the NAACP.
Abdul-Jabbar explains  that we’re witnessing a veritable “finger-wagging Olympics . . . all over the latest in a long line of rich white celebrities to come out of the racist closet.”
“Yes, I’m angry, too,” Abdul-Jabbar admits, “but not just about the sins of Donald Sterling. I’ve got a list.”
That list includes Sterling’s girlfriend, V. Stiviano, whose voice is heard on the racially-loaded tape and who likely set the Clippers’ owner up.

“Man, what a winding road she led him down to get all of that out,” he mocked. “She was like a sexy nanny playing ‘pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.’ She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.”

And speaking of the news media? “They caught big game on a slow news day,” Abdul-Jabbar explained, “so they put his head on a pike, dubbed him Lord of the Flies, and danced around him whooping.”
The former NBA all-star, who played for the Milwaukee Bucks and L.A. Lakers from 1969 to 1989, has no sympathy for Sterling. But he is upset that everyone is acting so surprised, noting that the NBA owner has said offensive comments in the past and has been sued over both housing and employment discrimination.

The NAACP “did nothing” after Sterling was forced to pay a staggering $3 million fine for denying housing to Blacks, saying they “smell, and attract vermin,” Abdul-Jabbar noted. They were even going to present Sterling with an NAACP award on May 15th, with the Rev. Al Sharpton on hand. “Suddenly he says he doesn’t want his girlfriend posing with Magic Johnson on Instagram and we bring out the torches and rope. Shouldn’t we have all called for his resignation back then?

Abdul-Jabbar is correct, but it is worse than that. The NAACP accepted multiple grants from the Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation and handed Sterling several “image awards” — despite full knowledge of his prior, massive fine for discrimination against Blacks in his slumlord housing.
Abdul-Jabbar, perhaps channeling his closet libertarianism, also blasted the fact that Sterling’s private conversation — however racist — was suddenly broadcast nationwide.

“Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way?” he asked, comparing the secret tape-recording to Mitt Romney’s embarrassing 47 percent remark, recorded without the then-candidate’s knowledge.
“The making and release of this tape is so sleazy that just listening to it makes me feel like an accomplice to the crime,” Abdul-Jabbar fumed. “We didn’t steal the cake but we’re all gorging ourselves on it.”

“So, if we’re all going to be outraged,” the former NBA star wrapped up, “let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars.’”
Brilliant.
+1
I'm not +1 this though valid. I'm sure he knew as well prior to this instance, did he make a stand at any point? If not, get off the soapbox.

Yall talking about that broad is the worst, **** she won.

Only reason this situation jumped off is because his jealous wife didn't like that he was taking this broad out in public and tricked off 2 million in gifts to her.

The wife sued because the 2 million he willing gave to her because it was "her" money too because all his money is "theirs" or community property.

She didn't have the funds liquid to fight that legal battle and then Donald T publicly backed his wife when he KNEW damn well he willingly gave that broad that money.

He put her in a corner and she played the only card she had.

She put herself in this situation.

Sterling is 50 years older than her, rich (obviously), and married. She is nothing but a gold digger.

She may have gone all in and won this hand, but she is quickly going to lose her chip stack.

This girl is good for nothing but sucking d. She will never be able to find another rich dude that will trust her.

Now what?

She played herself.

After the book and talk show circuit she should pocket 4 or 5 million.

She ain't work for none of this ****.
homegirl was sucking old people toes and suffering racial abuses...I guess she worked for it.

And Doc Rivers is talking about how bad his wife must feel and such an ordeal for her.... The same wife who has been with this guy throughout all his hatred and abuse of Blacks but suddenly she gets a break?... The same wife who was calling her husband a racist early morning yesterday and walking side by side with him later that evening claiming that he isn't one?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...to-have-made-racist-statements-too/?tid=hp_mm

“In a 2009 deposition, a tenant at one of the Sterling’s apartment buildings in Los Angeles County said that Rochelle Sterling called him a “black m—f—” during a discussion at the building.”
“I asked her again, I asked her, ‘would you reduce the rent?’” Darrell Rhodes said in the deposition. “And she said, ‘who do you think you are, you black m—f—.’
“The way in which she said m—f— was more lower voiced, under her breath. She said black loud enough for me to hear, she said mother loud enough for me to hear. F— part was a little lower. I had to look at her lips to hear her say it. And I did.”
Court documents obtained by the Times also assert that Shelly posed as a health department inspector and told an on-site manager, Maira Oliva, “Oh, my God. This is so filthy. I can’t remodel my apartments the way that I want because Latinos are so filthy.”

This is the lady who You as the supposed "Leader" felt it was okay to invite.
"She's been through as much as anyone as well," Rivers said after the game. "And so she just wanted... She asked if she could come, which I thought was a very nice gesture. And she just wanted the players to know that ... she told me to tell 'em that she loves 'em. So I thought, why not?"

Throughout this Entire scandal i have heard ONE BLACK MAN involved with basketball, ONE speak up with any kind of emotion and say hey man this really hurt me, & let's not ignore the role he has outside of basketball and the effect he has on people. I don't like this, and not be completely 100% politically correct (Charles Barkely last night).

Once again something happens and it's like everyone expects blacks to just take the high road and not bring up race too much, don't make any mentions in the media, Be mad personally in your lockerooms and homes but don't express any of it in Public. I'm tired of black people's angers being withheld and diminished in fear of it making non minorities "Uncomfortable". For once maybe they should feel the uncomfortableness that comes with being born black in America. I'm so sick of people having to shy away from expressing themselves in fear of backlash or being professional.

Wasn't Doc Rivers' house burned to the ground when he was in San Antonio in a racially motivated arson?

This is the dumbest thing I've seen today.

I could see that if your taking the stance of comparing War to a Racist owner and trying to deflect the real issue hear...

If you look at the main messages behind both it isn't dumb at all actually.

Muhammad Ali detested the war because it stood against all his beliefs & he felt he was being used and stripped of his dignity by a higher white power - In result he goes to jail, faces death threats, fines, stripped of all sports accolades.

The clippers team detest Donald Sterling because his views promote hatred and segregation towards them and their families. They felt they were being used and stripped of their dignity by a higher white power - In result they turned their Jerseys inside out for a few minutes(Only to have the logos front & center when the game comes on) & continue to make profit for a man who hates you & at the same time manage to not even speak on the situation in the Media AT ALL.

Two sets of MEN standing for their beliefs one risked his freedom the newer version wouldn't risk a minimal fine. Looks like a pretty sound analysis to me.

Unaware of what the NBA policies and regulations are, but are they allowed to force an owner to sell his team?

Ali didn't go to jail because he detested the war, he went to jail because he was drafted and refused to enlist.  Something required by federal law.

No one should compare the Clippers pre-game warm up shirts to Muhammed Ali's situation... "GHETTO PASS REVOKERS" did however...

Whoever made that pic and posted it is simply "like-whoring".

They made it seem as if it was possible in the press conference yesterday.... despite having all information prior to that lean towards no. Silver claims he needs 3/4 of the owners to vote with him & he's assured he'll get the votes.... While on the other hand Sterling is clearly stating he won't sell :rolleyes

So my guess is that they really can't "FORCE" him to sell & this case will be carried out quietly in courts for years while everyone is under the impression that the Clippers are in a good state and that everything is OK in the League again, Despite the team probably being handled by one of Sterlings relatives or minority owners who worked with him & for him throughout his tenure, despite knowing how he viewed blacks & latinos.

But don't worry the players will still be playing under a regime that enabled racism and prejudice but the posterboy for the hate "Sterling" has took a hit so in everybody's description it was a "Joyous" day in the NBA :{

AND HE REFUSED TO ENLIST BECAUSE..................... of his beliefs & not wanting to fight for a country that has declared war on him since birth. He didn't like the idea of being told who he should fight or hate so he went to jail for that.

The clippers Were told straight out that their "Owner" hated them, and they wouldn't even SPEAK on the matter publicly.... with the whole world behind them not one person could deal with the world Shaking consequences of..... An NBA fine.

Your right... NOBODY on that Clippers team deserves to be named in a ****** sentence with Ali.

Relax man, its okay.  The pic is apples vs oranges... Made by someone who wanted their stupid picture to go viral.

**** like that shouldn't get traction so I'll stop furthering said traction by talking about it at all.

It's not apples vs oranges though. Like the vid posted some pages back of the reporter giving a history of discrimination in sports and what the players did. Back in the day they refused to play until their demands were met. Today they turn their shirts inside out for 15 minutes.

Nt will not and probably never understand since most of NT is younger. I've been saying this since this weekend. Most people on NT do not really understand american history (via personal research). Which is why this is being swept under the rug. Sorry man. We lost this one. I doubt a chance like this will happen again because the power that be will smarten up. As they did throughout history.

There was absolutely no need for the players to strike. But let's say they did. Then what? What did you hope this would lead to?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin, Stachel Page etc etc endure much harsher racism, hate mail, death threats but they would go out every night and play?

This is what kills me not only did they not protest the game (The Warriors, Thunder, & Wizards were all prepared to sit out their games) The ****** players said NOTHING, NOTHING at all they elected Doc to be the voice of the team.

doc then goes on to invite the wife of this racist bastard to the game with the audacity to say "she's been through so much".

You mean to tell me blake Or CP couldn't come out and say this will not be tolerated by the players, i am not gonna sit here and be a slave for someone who hates me?

Just a actual emotional comment would have been something. Instead we get politically correct answers from the coach and the NBA gets a sweet stroy to go back to business & look as if this problem was solved, knowing damn well is isn't
