Lock Thread

He's earned a chance to play for a contender, and unless Reggie can shape the roster into one by training camp I don't see why Charles would want to hitch whatever he's got left to us. I'd love for him to stay, though. Just not hopeful.

Veldheer, Raiders engaged in contract negotiations

December 2, 2013, 5:15 pm

ALAMEDA – Jared Veldheer’s contract is nearly up. The Raiders’ fourth-year left tackle will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, but he might not hit the open market.

Veldheer said in a Monday interview with 95.7 FM that contract talks are active and ongoing and that he’s confident he’ll remain a Raider long-term.

“They’re in talks right now,” Veldheer said in an interview with John Lund and Greg Papa. “I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about finishing the year out and playing these last four games. I want to help this team as much as possible and to help turn that page and get going where we need to go.

“I believe that, if I handle that and play as well as I can play, good things will follow there. I’m really hoping and I’m pretty confident that I’ll continue to keep playing in Oakland.”

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie hoped to extend Veldheer by now, but a major triceps injury tabled the original plan. Veldheer surgically repaired a partially torn left triceps on Aug. 17. He was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return a few weeks later, completed a thorough rehab and made his season debut on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Raiders planned to ease him back into game action, but Veldheer played every snap in the Dallas loss. He was as good as ever, allowing just one quarterback hurry despite playing against seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end DeMarcus Ware. He responded well to game action and considers his rehab complete.

Such an effort gives the Raiders confidence that they’d be retaining a top-tier offensive lineman. Veldheer’s camp wanted their offensive lineman to return and re-establish his value when healthy.

Veldheer plays a premium position, where annual salaries can reach eight digits. Veldheer’s numbers aren't expected to go that high, but he won’t come cheap. He’s regarded highly for his work, especially considering he played every NFL snap before the triceps injury. He’s relatively young, extremely competent and of high character, fitting the mold for who the Raiders want.

Veldheer wants to show well down the final stretch, when he’s expected to be a fixture at left tackle.

“I want to continue to improve my game and continue to get better,” Veldheer said during Monday’s open locker room session. “I want to win. I know these guys in here want the same thing. That’s our focus from here on out.”

I dunno. Charles has his 1 ring already and 2 superbowl appearances. (although the 1 ring he did not get to play with the broken collar bone.)

I feel like he just wants to stack. I'd like Reggie to keep him and sign for like a 2-3 year contract. That veteran presence and the fact that he still puts his all into the game is priceless.

Regardless, it feels good seeing him out there in that Silver and Black again.

Yea he's had plenty of opportunities to play with a contender, most recently he opted to go with us. Numerous of other factors involved too and I think many of them point to him staying in Oakland.  One thing fans don't always consider are the amenities of living some where like Oakland/Bay Area, location and comfort can mean a lot to a vet at this stage in their career.

He has his winery business out here too. C Wood really has nothing left to prove I honestly think he'll retire a Raider. If not, we roll with Young.

Beat writer Steve Corkran wrote in a group chat with fans that significant cuts are expected soon, after this game.

I keep saying this, but Reggie needs to justify his worth this off-season. This is likely his one chance to do it.

He'll be a Patriot soon :{

:lol you know it...been saying it since he got hurt the first time this season...Pats will sign him in the off season...didnt expect it would be this season lol

And I cant even help but laugh..seriously?! Dude rushes for like 15 yards last week and gets hurt again in a non related one from before lol

I wouldn't cut Ford or McFadden, if they have good seasons next year we'd get compensatory picks.

If they're cut we don't get ****.

I don't know if Ford has a good season left in him. I do see McFadden fitting into a scheme somewhere as a spell back.

I am excited to see what the young guys bring to the table next year.

Also interested to see in what they will do with Pryor.

Will the #1 WR issue be addressed?

I will be renewing my season tickets next year. lol. I mean the wheels have to fall off in Denver at some point and KC's honeymoon period has to come to an end. The Chargers...well....F4ck the Chargers. lol.

I didn't renew this year for the first time in 6 years, went to a handful of games this year that reminded me why :lol :{ Depending how this offseason goes I'll decide if I'll be going back or not.

**** it I've been down to cut Ford :lol

But I'm considering season tickets next year... just wondering how they're going to do prices since we lose a home game to London next year :{

Any1 knows what NFC division we're playing next year? And I hate how we gotta hm gm in London :{
