They didn't. There are actually different variations of coke in Mexico. Some with sugar and some with high fructose syrup. There are political reasons for this, I'll give you a link.

Mexican coke is absolutely not a lie, I'll tell you that much.

I used to buy them from Costco. nt'ers were going it up and I was disappointed. Was less carbonated and less crisp than regular Coke.

I don’t know what happened to the Mexican cokes but they aren’t the same as they used to be... I think it’s the carbonation level... reggie Cokes out the can are better but I just can’t stand the finish corn syrup leaves on your palette...

I try not to drink soda but I'll have a "Mexican" coke every now and again. Regular coke has a weird taste that coats your whole mouth when you drink it. Hard to describe but I bought a regular can the other day and it just felt off

There’s two different kinds. You need to look on the label for the one with cane sugar.
