Werner: Red Sox trying to make big deal
Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, in town for Jim Rice's induction, said yesterday that general manager Theo Epstein is "burning the midnight oil" trying to make an impact deal before Friday's trade deadline. It appears the Sox are still in the hunt for Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay and Indians catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez.
Dodgers deny Indians blockbuster
The Dodgers swiftly and emphatically shot down a published report Sunday that said they were in serious discussions with the Cleveland Indians in a trade that would bring pitcher Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to the Dodgers while sending James Loney and either Chad Billingsley or Clayton Kershaw and prospects to the Indians. The report surfaced on Foxsports.com, but the Dodgers shot it down immediately. "It's completely false," a Dodgers executive said.
Phillies shifting focus to Lee?
While the Phillies' strong preference was to acquire Roy Halladay, they were expected to send superscout Charley Kerfeld to watch 2008 American League Cy Young winner Cliff Lee pitch for Cleveland in Seattle yesterday. Baseball sources believe that a package of second-tier prospects like pitcher Carlos Carrasco and infielder Jason Donald might be sufficient to pry Lee from Cleveland.

The Rays and Red Sox are each discussing blockbuster deals with the Indians for both Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Come on, Texas.

According to Heyman, the Rangers will not trade one of the Big Four (Holland, Feliz, Smoak, Perez) for Cliff Lee...

KLJ how do you feel about the Phillies prospects to offer for Lee? Already know OKB isn't too high on them
Yankees And Reds Talking ArroyoTrade
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 27 at 5:00pm CST]

The Yankees and Reds are seriously discussing a Bronson Arroyo trade, according to Jeff Fletcher of AOL FanHouse. One of Fletcher's sources saysthe possible deal "will get done," though the two clubs haven't determined how much of the $4MM remaining on Arroyo's contract the Reds willpay. Arroyo will make $11MM next season and the same amount in 2011 if his team doesn't buy him out for $2MM.

Earlier this afternoon Fletcher reported that the Reds could beon the brink of making a move

I don't understand the Garko deal. Garko has similar numbers to Travis Ishikawa, this is one of those "let's make a deal, just to make adeal".

Josh Willingham's stock continues to increase, or should i say skyrocket. 2 GRAND SLAMS TONIGHT!

Willingham warrants a pretty hefty return: .300 AVG, 16 HR, 39 RBI, .412 OBP, .599 SLG

You're not getting more than a B-level prospect or two for Willingham...

Oh well in that case... You're still not getting more than a B-level prospect or two for Willingham...

Teams aren't willing to trade top young talent for Roy %%%!!$! Halladay. The hell makes you think they'll do it for Willingham?

Anybody read this article on Billy Beane and the Moneyball movie? Great read...

http://sports.espn.go.com...nt_howard&id=4357166

Remember when I said Moneyball was changing?
The Moneyball concept -- recognizing the most valuable but least expensive commodities in player evaluation -- was immediately transformed in public perception into an obsession with on-base percentage. Therefore, a team that values on-base percentage is considered to espouse "Moneyball principles" -- even though, as Beane points out, players with high on-base percentages have now become extremely expensive.

Today, in an ironic nod to yesteryear, the undervalued quality in the baseball marketplace is the high school player with little polish but high potential, which is exactly how Beane has drafted lately.

I think the Mets might be turning into buyers here. With the win tonight and news that Reyes is coming back within 10 days I could see a small little move.Willingham would be a nice little addition, as well as a guy like Washburn.

The Mets should sell. They are 10.5 games back in the NL East and 6.5 games back in the Wild Card. It is a tough ladder to climb. They shouldsee what they can get for their tradeable assets, if they have any.

The Mariners have a better shot of winning the AL West than the Mets do of winning the NL East/Wild Card. They are not selling, foolishly.

Mets need to sell like crazy...

10 games back at the start of August? Yeah, right.
