Alex Smith being anything more than a stop gap to 2011

If the 9ers dont take a QB this year its gone be trouble.

He's played in 8 games this year, and at least looks like he can handle the job. The 3 years prior he could do nothing at all. I'm notsaying he's in the top 5, 10, or 15 but he's at least able to make plays and make throws out there. Maybe from having added weapons or better playcalling, at least now he's doing something besides cashing his paycheck every week.
And Dre might be right, maybe it's just because the QB's in the Bay have been terrible for so long. He's 3-4 as a starter, not great but he'salso faced some tough games, @ Indy, Arizona, @ GB, the Bears and Titans and Jags. Those are decent teams he's gone up against, and he's at least heldhis own.

You know damn well nobody expected a damn thing from him all year coming into the season. That at least shows improvement, something he can build on for nextyear. If he regresses next year, then I guess I was wrong. No big deal.

Alex misses so many passes past 15 yards that it's hard for me to hand him the keys yet. His accuracy needs to approve as well as his decision making. Thatinterception he threw last night was horrible. VD was wide open but of course he never saw him.
Holmgren hire by Christmas?
12:20PM ET

[h5]Mike Holmgren | Seahawks | Interested: 49ers?, Seahawks?, Buccaneers?, Browns?[/h5]
Top Email

Been a week since there was any new concrete detail on the Mike Holmgren sweepstakes, but Tuesday's set of updates are massive.

[h5]Why Cleveland rocks for Mike[/h5]
 • Although he's made some questionable hires in the past, team owner Randy Lerner is dedicated to pleasing his fanbase, even meeting with two fan representatives earlier this season to discuss the future of the team. Holmgren will be given the financial support necessary to build a winner.
 • The Browns have been stockpiling draft picks -- they'll have 10, including a Top 5 in the first, by unofficial count -- with a variety of moves over the past season. They need help in a lot of places, but for a savvy personnel guy like Holmgren, that's a fun challenge.
 • Although head coach Eric Mangini seemed to save his own rear end by beating the Steelers last Thursday, Holmgren could come in and install an entirely new staff to his liking.

Via Twitter, NFL Insider Adam Schefter passes along the following: "Akron Beacon Journal nailed it. Mike Holmgren is in Cleveland today to meet with the Browns. It is confirmed. And very interesting."

The nature of the Browns' job opening has to be intriguing for Holmgren. He'll be the new "czar" of Browns football -- hopefully wearing a hat like this while on the job -- and he'll get to re-shape the franchise to his liking, with an owner who seems to want to please his devoted fanbase (even announcing this week that they'll be setting up a Fan Advisory Panel).

An update from Schefter on Twitter: "Feeling is Seattle is still probable destination for Holmgren. It's up to Browns to see if they can sell him on Cleveland and organization."

Another Twitter update, this time from Mort: "Sources told me Holmgren would like to have future clarified/secured by Christmas. If he takes Browns job, Mangini's future in jeopardy."
Giants are dirty too?
9:38AM ET

[h5]Aaron Ross | Giants[/h5]
Top Email

The New York Giants were up in arms over the play of Flozell Adams -- and rightly so -- after the Dallas Cowboys lineman continued his trend of questionable tactics during the game between the NFC East rivals in Week 13. Adams was eventually fined by the NFL and told that continued malfeasance would earn him a suspension.

But the Giants themselves are not perfect little angels either, as many who watched the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night noticed. Late in the third quarter, Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson appeared to chirp something in the direction of safety Aaron Ross. The perturbed Ross then blatantly head-butted Jackson, but a flag was not thrown because the official on the play was looking elsewhere. There's an air of WWE-style antics involved in all of this.

But the cameras caught the play, and Eagles coach Andy Reid is submitting the evidence to the league, according to Birds' Eye View. "The league takes care of the rest," Reid said. A fine is likely in order for Ross this week.
Mora's job on the line?
10:33AM ET

[h5]Jim L. Mora | Seahawks[/h5]
Top Email

The Seattle Seahawks' manhandling by the Houston Texans on Sunday will have major ramifications this week, according to what head coach Jim Mora said on his TV show. During the interview, the coach was asked what could be taken from the game, to which he responded, "Nothing. We got our butts handed to us. If you are getting paid by Paul Allen and the Seahawks, your butt is on notice." That's an active day for Seattle's butts: first handed to them, now on notice.

Anyways, as far as specific changes are concerned, the offensive line is first in line in Mora's crosshairs, as we discussed yesterday.

But is there a deeper issue in Seattle than just the one bad game? On the issue of "effort" -- with the insinuation that the coach is at fault for poor effort -- Mora said, "I don't see that as being a problem. Now, consistency in execution? Absolutely an issue." So is it a problem with the talent level? "If I believe it's a talent deficiency, this is certainly not the time to talk about it."

There will be big changes this offseason in Seattle, and they might involve the head coach, depending on what the new GM wants to do.
