no one is going to the movies to learn about history, b
are you serious right now?
No one is going anywhere to learn about history these days, thats the point. It'd be different if every public school in america had comprehensive coverage of the egyptian empire and all the little school kids already knew the facts behind this historical society. They don't, and they likely will have little exposure, certainly not as entertaining or attention getting exposure, to the real history and contributions of Africans in our society as they will through movies and entertainment. This movie was an opportunity to paint black Africans in a very positive light on a grand scale and highlight the contributions egyptians have made to society. Yet they choose mostly white actors to portray this greatness.
I can't help but thinking, and maybe this is a reach, but if there were more depictions of black people in a positive light, not just this particular movie. But across all movies and entertainment. Maybe you wouldn't have white girls on college campuses referring to black people as monkeys or have anxiety stricken hispanics patrolling their neighborhoods with blood in their eye at the first sight of dark skin.
yeah because people are really going to see this for history and not blockbuster action
Every movie teaches you something, whether you realize it or not. Whether it was your intention to learn something at the theater or not is irrelevant. As if these couch potatoes are gonna spend a second otherwise researching ad*****d African civilizations.
I didn't say it should get a pass. I am saying why it does not when it comes to blackface. There is no such thing as whiteface. This term just got branded because of the word blackface. In the end, it is all to demean another race. But, I think some should be more understanding of why feathers get ruffled if blackface is done.
No level or severity of stereotyping should get a pass. We either allow all of it, or none of it.
There is a reason why white people doing blackface is criticized and does not get a pass. It is all due to context and connotations of it all because of history. During a time in history, there was slavery, blacks were seen as second class citizens, they were oppressed, persecuted and ostracized for centuries. Blackface was another oppressive and demeaning portrayal of blacks. To this day, blacks are STILL discriminated based on the color of their skin and experience racism on a bigger scale than their white counterparts. Negative stereotypes and "blackface" today done in satire or as a prejudice act still reinforce that persecuting nature of what blacks experienced under white dominant rule throughout history and in the present. Doing so called "whiteface" does not have that same context in history or even today . The histories and today's experiences between both races cannot even be compared. Whereas "blackface" might bring back the whole context of the history of blacks in the U.S., and even the deep prejudices they still face today, I doubt a white person seeing someone painting their face white and doing white stereotypes experience the same dehumanized feeling or prejudice. All about context.
No level or severity of stereotyping should get a pass. We either allow all of it, or none of it.
I think people are trying to make an outcry about so called "whiteface" is because they were pissed there was backlash about blackface and that they wouldn't get a pass to do it or laugh about it. Now all of a sudden there is an outcry when back when in movies and in comedies painting faces white and doing negative stereotypes was even laughed at by white people watching these shows and not even a thought crossed it was offensive.
lol I guess, Nick Cannon doing it does make it more offensive on many levels. I think people are more offended by the hypocrisy behind it, than the actual act of white face. I think their offense to this is valid. I never asked why black people are offended about black face, I'm just saying stereotypes against white are also offensive. People keep bringing up black face in an attempt to dismiss the fact that this is blatant hypocrisy.
I agree with you on your general point.
Yea there's a reason why blackface stings, people keep bringing up the same mute point over and over again. However if someone says white caricatures and stereotyping is offensive who are you to tell them their feelings toward it aren't valid. Fighting for your right to offend other groups, it isn't just white people. I've heard black people say racists sh...about Asians, Middle Eastern, etc. This mentality that only your group can be offended is very pervasive amongst many cultures. That is the mentality I'm challenging people to break. It's either you allow it all or don't allow it at all. You don't get to cherry pick.
Jesus Christ Anton, you of all people should know nothing is purely black or white or this or that. It's been repeated and exponential amount of times in here, and quite thoroughly .
Another example of some, not all white people(you may not even be white, who knows just using what you said) trying to make up the rules because the rules which we know most of the times benefit a certain population more than other's,racially, economically, class wise, ect don't fit into what you want or see as being fair and then it turns into it's either all or nothing at all.No my friend slowly those days are coming to an end where you have the right or at least you feel like you do to dibble, dabble in all aspects of what could, should and is fair in your world.Taking the racial part out of it It's really now an American problem where Americans think opinion's rise above and resonates over truth. No level or severity of stereotyping should get a pass. We either allow all of it, or none of it.
Why are you even still responding? Especially to posts like that one. **** wasn't even close to being coherent.Don't stereotype ANYONE. What a terrible idea.Another example of some, not all white people(you may not even be white, who knows just using what you said) trying to make up the rules because the rules which we know most of the times benefit a certain population more than other's,racially, economically, class wise, ect don't fit into what you want or see as being fair and then it turns into it's either all or nothing at all.No my friend slowly those days are coming to an end where you have the right or at least you feel like you do to dibble, dabble in all aspects of what could, should and is fair in your world.Taking the racial part out of it It's really now an American problem where Americans think opinion's rise above and resonates over truth.
Nick Canon did it and is it a big deal?no of course not because there is no terrible history behind it mocking white people "Ha-ha-ha a black man making fun of us white people but he's still black" it's the attitude. But is it fair?no it's not but if everyone pointed out something that isn't fair it would consume and swallow this country up.Before some of you get upset over what Nick Canon is doing watch your local news and get upset over what is going on in your own neck of the woods with our governments and what's going on the other side of the world.
Travon is dead while in other news Zimmerman is still $%^#*$# up but life isn't fair,I didn't create the rules I just try to bend them when I can while living by them.
