I found a solution to stop the creasing. Since the shoe is made narrow, I stuff a half piece of paper towel in the trouble area wear creasing occurs. It works beautifully and won’t hurt you toes. I walked in my pair today and the store employee even asked why mines look so crisp

I use force fields it fills in the space nicely, it also helps with banana shape shoes like AJ12.

To answer my own question, the ‘91 release does appear to have suede like material on the toe. Gonna hold off on ordering til I see these in person and try them on. Doubt these will go fast (maybe on NDC but not elsewhere).

Despite my feelings about the leather toe, and hoping it was something on the kids release only, I still ordered a pair off NDC. 
I have a pair of the 08 blue toe that's starting to look pretty vintage, all of the white parts have turned into a cream/off-white shade.
