Glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way about Sculpin. I've been preaching about how good it is since i first had it 4ish years ago. Here in SD, its available on tap in practically every restaurant/bar that has beers on tap. And for that i am grateful

They're not necessarily taking shots at Elysian. they're trying to make all craft seem less appealing so their consumers don't get curious and venture out into craft. Keeping their consumers blind. I'm guessing over time InBev will brew drastically less bud and a lot more craft beer as they acquire craft brewery's. Playing both sides of the field. In the end it's just dollar signs for the company.

I know that they're not necessarily taking shots at Elysian in particular. It's just funny that the commercial pokes fun at the idea of a craft brewery making a "pumpkin peach ale" when Elysian actually makes a pumpkin peach ale.
Speaking of peaches in beer: I saw that Westbrook sometimes has Peach Gose in their taproom. I'd make the pilgrimage.

So I did a blind IPA/DIPA tasting yesterday. These things are SUPER tough.
Order of finish left to right.
Marble IPA 1/15/15 bottling date
LA Cumbre Elevated 1/8/15 canned date
Victory Hop Ranch. best by 4/23/15

Some notables:
-The four on the left were separated initially as having the best aromas
-I guessed Sculpin wrong. The beer I thought was the best tasting beer ever just a day before. I thought what was eventually deemed Marble IPA, as Sculpin.
-I guessed Elevated wrong. I smelled hop juice with what seemed like a distinct DIPA type sweetness, but I couldnt pinpoint it as elevated
-Hop Hunter, I guessed right. Something biscuity in the aroma and taste.
-Hop Ranch didn't seem too boozy considering its ABV. Nice aroma as well.
-The three on the right were separated with the two on the right having a distinct wet hop almost mildew like aroma. Kind of musky. What ended up being Sculpin was just so subtle, it didnt seem to win out in any way.
-Picking Marble and LC, two locals was a bit of a shock. I guessed them wrong, so it came as a nice surprise. Freshness may have played a part. I don't think I'm biased for local.
I shall try this again this coming weekend

This evening I had a 2 hearted on its own. Not quite as musky as the prior two that I had. Still a sweet/heavy mouthfeel bite. I did catch some mellow hop notes.. Nothing too crazy as far as ABV Clean finishing beer.. Best it's tasted thus far.
I also went ahead and had another Sculpin.. Super lemony and citrus hop aroma. Taste is very similar. Super dry and subtle flavors.. On it's own, its a beastly beer. Clean dry crisp bite with a touch of bitterness. Back to how it tasted on its own.
Samplings can be very tough on your senses. I'm not sure I learned too much. Seeking out or spending way above the norm for some "special" beers may not be worth it. I guess thats one conclusion. Unless you live in a cave somewhere, your local IPA options should be up there with the best of them.

For the Xocoveza fans such as myself, I'm hearing the barrel aging process has begun.........in tequila barrels. Mixed feelings about this. Me and tequila stopped being friends about 15 years ago.

Ugh. I can't even say I have mixed feelings about this. I'm just bummed, really. The last time I had tequila was my 23rd birthday. I had some tequila barrel aged IPA awhile back. It was okay. Way subtle. Possibly not worth the time or the effort. When I think of nutmeg and cinnamon, I don't think of tequila at all. A local brewery did a bacardi rum barrel aged barley wine I believe. Really good stuff.
If anything Xocoveza needs a touch more sweetness/mouthfeel and a slight whiskey flavoring would be so so so ideal. I guess that would be the predictable stance on an already "unique" beer.

Today's grabs. The Abyss just got label approval here in Texas and people are scrambling to grab them. Happy I ended up with two.
The Funky Gold definitely snuck up on me the past few weeks. Really mild sour with a strong hit of hops. Definitely starting to hoard these. They'll be a great beer when it starts getting warmer.

4 cases of Abyss sitting around my way. I'm guessing some hoarder will use his tax refund on acquiring quite a bit.. Not sure how much of a trade bate that is anymore.. I found it great, but I am sorta over it (after having passed it up 3 times already). It's great but after having it, now what? I just spent $16 and for what really? I like my bomber mindset lol.
Today I did pickup more Ten Fidy. Stunning stuff. Just a barebones imperial stout with nothing too crazy to add on any front. I love it. The price scares 95% of the people out there. Doesn't make sense.
I'm having fun with this sculpin, two hearted, hop ranch, and dirtwolf cache. But I'm almost going crazy. One day I really like a beer. The next, I find some hints that seem off, or its not as "WOW" worthy. I mentioned how great those beers were tasting the other night. Magical.. In 3 other sittings, I haven't captured that magic yet.. One day sculpin tasted quite a bit bitter. Still dry backbone but there was a bitterness. Subtle citrus was not what I saw, at all.. Two hearted finally had a session where it tasted the best it has.. Locally, Marble IPA went from tasting very similar to sculpin, to having a touch of pineyness (new younger bottles). I get there is such a thing as palate fatigue. I may be experiencing this. I did try to drink each one on a seemingly empty stomach, as the first drink of the evening. For some, the beer seemed more vibrant almost to a fault. Others shined... I guess I should shut up and just drink. I'm trying to value if these guys are worth picking up in a trade in the future as I pit them against local/regionals.

Ten Fidy is my go-to stout. Just put two down. It is literally sitting on shelves here. Not sure if it's the price which I think is quite reasonable. I really think the ease of acquiring it also has a negative impact on people searching for more limited releases. Oh well. More for me.
I just wish I could get my hands on the Ten Fidy barrel aged more than twice a year.
