A chance at playing for the Browns would be a dream come true for former Massillon and Michigan standout Shawn Crable. Ella Kirkland remembers Ohio State coach Jim Tressel sitting on her couch in Massillon a few years back, trying to recruit her foster son, Shawn Crable, a star defensive player for the Massillon Tigers.
"Coach Tressel was such a nice man and we were really impressed," said Kirkland. "But it was Shawn's lifelong dream to play for Michigan. He always wanted to be a Wolverine."
Crable, whom the Browns spent an hour with at the NFL Combine in February and might be able to land in the fourth round of this weekend's draft, became just that. As an outside linebacker for the Wolverines, he finished second in the nation with 28.5 tackles for losses last season and added 7.5 sacks.
Curiously, Crable wasn't one of the 30 players the Browns brought in to Berea for pre-draft visits, but that doesn't mean they won't take him if he's there at No. 122 overall, their first pick. After all, Braylon Edwards never visited Cleveland before the 2005 draft.
The Patriots, Steelers and Jets have all hosted Crable, but if the Browns do take him, he could be the pass-rush specialist they need to pair with Kamerion Wimbley.
"I think I'd compliment Wimbley very well," Crable (6-4 1/2, 245) said at the Combine.
Crable's former Michigan defensive coordinator, Ron English, now in that capacity at Louisville, has high hopes for him.
"The ceiling is really high for Shawn and he has a chance to be a very good football player," said English. "The more he plays, the better he'll get. He's a big guy, he's smart and he can run (4.6 in the 40). He can learn all they want him to learn."
