Fargas, Warren on the way out in Oakland
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 4, 2010 11:30 AM ET

We noted last week that Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas and defensive tackle Gerard Warren had roster bonuses coming and were candidates to be released. Apparently that's about to happen.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that both Fargas and Warren are expected to get cut before those bonuses are due in the coming days.

Although the Raiders are always unpredictable, it wasn't hard to see these cuts coming.

Fargas is 30 years old and has seen his yards and yards per carry decrease in each of the last two seasons. Warren is 31 and had a career-low two sacks in 2009.

Rex Ryan needs another starting cornerback, and Antonio Cromartie needs a new team.

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi says that the Jets are "extremely" interested in Cromartie despite some reports to the contrary.  (Check out our one-liners Wednesday.)

The fit makes a lot of sense.  The Jets aren't afraid to trade draft picks for talent, and few deny Cromartie's raw skills.  Rex Ryan certainly won't lack confidence that he's the man that can get the best out of Cromartie.

The guy scares me, even if it's for the jets' 5th rounder... All the talent in the world but doesn't put it all together consistently (AFC divisional game anyone?)

No way we give up a 1st or 2nd if the Chargers were looking at Maurice freaking Morris anyway.

Gimme Richard Marshall from Carolina for a 2nd over Cromartie for a 5th...

as soft as cro is a 2nd for marshall over a 5th for cro is never going to happen.
Chargers will keep Sproles
Darren Sproles, here escaping a ******** defender during the Jan. 3 game at Qualcomm Stadium, likely will play his home games there again in the 2010 season.

The Chargers have changed their minds.

The team is placing a first-and-third tender on running back Darren Sproles, sources said Thursday morning.

Sproles had been notified last week the Chargers would not tender him as a restricted free agent and would allow him to test the market as an unrestricted free agent.

The move guarantees Sproles a salary of $7.27 million if he stays with the Chargers, unless the club can sign him to a long-term deal. He made $6.62 million last season as the Chargers' franchise player and is entitled to a 10 percent raise.

The Chargers' initial thinking in not tendering Sproles was that they couldn't justify paying a kick returner and third-down back that much. They had hoped to continue talking to him about a multiyear contract even as he tested the market.

A source said Sproles was scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend and also St. Louis, Philadelphia and Washington.

It is unlikely he will take those trips now. Any team signing him would have to give the Chargers a first-round and third-round pick.

Earlier Thursday, before the Chargers decided to tender him, Sproles said he was excited about free agency.

Logan Mankins tendered at highest level

By Mike Reiss
ESPNBoston.com

The New England Patriots placed tender offers on their three restricted free agents Thursday, assigning the first- and third-round tender to Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins, the second-round tender to kicker Stephen Gostkowski and the low tender to outside linebacker Pierre Woods.

RFA tenders explained
By placing a tender on a restricted free agent, a team establishes the compensation it would receive if the player is signed to an offer sheet by another team and that offer wasn't matched. In the case of Mankins, the Patriots chose the richest possible option. That tender is worth $3.26 million on a one-year term. That level of tender makes it highly unlikely another team would pursue Mankins because that team wouldn't want to give up first- and third-round draft picks.Gostkowski's tender is for $1.75 million. If a team signed him to an offer sheet, and it wasn't matched, the Patriots would receive a second-round pick. It's unlikely another team would be willing to do that for a kicker. If there was a mild surprise, it was with Woods, who tied for the team lead in special teams tackles. The Patriots tendered him at the low level, which means another team could sign him to an offer sheet and if the Patriots did not match they would not receive any draft-pick compensation because Woods entered the league as a rookie free agent. As expected, linebacker Gary Guyton received a tender offer from the Patriots at the minimum level required for an exclusive rights free agent.Guyton's contract expires Thursday, but as an exclusive rights free agent he is not free to negotiate with other clubs. By tendering him, the Patriots ensure that the third-year veteran will return to the team in 2010.Mike Reiss covers the Patriots for ESPNBoston.com. Follow him on Twitter.

Cincinnati Bengals release WR Laveranues Coles
BY JOE REEDY • [email protected] • MARCH 4, 2010

In a move that was seen coming for two months, the Bengals have officially released Lavernaues Coles, making him an unrestricted free agent.

In his lone season with the Bengals, Coles, who will be entering his 11th season, caught 43 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns.

His best game came in the Week 9 win over Baltimore when he had six receptions for 72 yards. Coles was scheduled to make $4.65 million in base salary this season.

During the past two weeks, coach Marvin Lewis talked about how Coles brought professionalism to the locker room and helped serve as a mentor to Chad Ochocinco and other receivers.

But, there was no mention of his on field performance and Lewis kept referring to Coles in the past tense -- two leading indicators that he was as good as gone.

With Coles diminished speed and injury problems, including concussions, finding another team might be difficult.

That move wasn't seen coming for two months this isn't a Mike Brown type of move at all. I'm glad that he let him go though.
