Manny suspended for use of PEDs
Ramirez biggest name to be sidelined by MLB's drug policyBy Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

05/07/09 12:07 PM ET

LOS ANGELES -- Major League Baseball suspended Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez for 50 games on Thursday for use of performance enhancing drugs.

Major League Baseball made an official announcement shortly after noon ET.

Ramirez, who turns 37 on May 30, will begin the suspension with Thursday night's Dodgers-Nationals game. He would be eligible to return around July 3,depending on rainouts.

Ramirez -- an 12-time All-Star who immediately became the face of the Dodgers franchise upon his acquisition last summer -- is the biggest name player to beissued a 50-game suspension under the MLB's more stringent drug policy that was adopted in 2006.

According to the drug policy, a player receives a 50-game suspension for a first positive drug test, a 100-game suspension for a second positive test and alifetime ban for a third positive test. The suspensions are without pay.

Ramirez re-signed with the Dodgers as a free agent this spring to a two-year contract that was to pay him $25 million.

Ramirez has been a key component in leading the Dodgers to the best record in baseball this year. In 27 games, he is batting .348 with six home runs and 20RBIs. He is among league leaders in slugging and on-base percentage and has become the biggest drawing card the Dodgers have had since Fernando Valenzuela, even recently having a portion of the left-field box seats rechristened "Mannywood."

Juan Pierre would be the immediate replacement for Ramirez in left field, while the Dodgers are expected to promote rookie Xavier Paul from Triple-AAlbuqueruque to replace Ramirez on the active roster.

^with that said, I hope manny and the team have a meeting, use it for something to make them stronger till he comes back.

Honestly, you guys have nothing to worry about. He will be back around the All Star break.

Yes, its nearly a third of the season he loses, but I think the real loss will be the negative media impact this will have on the team.. Torre will have toplay peacemaker. I still think you have the strongest team in the west. The next best team? The .500 sorry @ss Giants.

You guys will be just fine.

I think we all knew Manny was juiced, we probably talked about it wayyy back when Canseco mentioned it.

More information needs to come out.

How am I jumping to conclusions?

We had a pretty good conversation about this during spring training / jose canseco calling Manny out - his numbers during that era were questionable, but henever got the finger pointed at him because he was so good with the media.

During spring training, a couple of us pointed out something looked off with Manny - like he had something to say or knew something was gonna come out.

Whether he tested positive for roids / ped - Manny already waved his rights to appeal this case, so he's manning up and taking that 50 game suspension.

Saying he got something prescribed for a personal health issue, it was not a steroid - but it was a banned substance.

stupid MLB drug policy

how is there no differentiation between a doctor-prescribed medicine and a steroid or HGH?

the guy goes to the doctors and gets medicine, and MLB considers it a steroid?

just to point out, i came down with the flu last night (hope its not the swinnne) - and this %*%# has been making my head has been throbbing like no otherbecause of this.

"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," Ramirez said in a statement issued by the players' union.

"Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons."
