Cubs Comeback Again
Cubs beat Indians 8-7

The baseball gods -- and opponents' bullpens -- are smiling on the Cubs.

And the Cubs are smiling all the way to the baseball bank, stashing away some very important victories right when they need them most.

For the second straight afternoon, the Cubs scored four runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth, although it took them 10 innings Friday finally to beatthe Indians 8-7.

And you want to know how they won?

--With the loss going to Luis Vizcaino, whom the Cubs released in April.

--With the blown save going to former Cubs hero Kerry Wood because of a home run to maybe-ex-good friend Derrek Lee.

--With the victory going to Cubs' closer Kevin Gregg, who was brought in to replace Wood.

--And with a two-out base hit -- a squibber that eluded first baseman Victor Martinez and rolled into shallow right field -- from Ryan Theriot to score Alfonso Soriano.

Did Theriot even suspect the wiggler would turn into a hit?

"No. Yes and no," he said. "It was a pitch I was looking for. It was a little slower than what I thought.

"Hey, man it worked out, the baseball gods were smiling on me and we got the win."

Oh, those baseball gods play strange games on the North Side.

This was the Cubs' third walk-off victory of the week, with Theriot also singling against the Twins on Sunday and Soriano singling the winner home Thursdayagainst the White Sox.

But perhaps the most dramatic moment of this stretch came in the ninth inning, with the Indians ahead a run and Wood staring down from the mound at Lee.

Lee smacked a fastball into the left-field bleachers as his second homer of the day sent the game into extra innings.

"It was fun, having played with Woody for so long," said Lee, who has hit three homers in two days. "He made a good pitch, jammed me, but it gotup in the wind."

Much to the delight of 40,155 fans, who endured an 86-minute rain delay before first pitch and then 3 hours and 38 minutes that turned into high drama.

Wood threw Lee a curveball then shook off catcher Kelly Shoppach three times before deciding on a fastball.

"Derrek, he played behind me all those years, it's like he knew what was coming," Wood said. "He was smiling after he hit it."

The Cubs scored four runs in the eighth with the help of an error, a two-run double from Andres Blanco and another base hit from Soriano.

Soriano walked off Vizcaino with two outs in the 10th, then stole second.

"I don't remember the last time I was trying to steal, but I went for it and I got it," he said.

"It started with a walk, remember," manager Lou Piniella said of the winning rally. "We've talkedabout [lack of walks] for the last few months."

Friday's ending was so different from the beginning, when Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee was staked to a 7-0 leadafter three innings because Rich Harden allowed three-run homers in the second and third innings.

"It was ugly," Harden said.

In the end, it was a thing of beauty for Cubs fans, thanks to a second straight day of late heroics.

"[Now] we'll see what this team is capable of doing when we swing the bats a little more consistently," Derrek Lee said.

D Lee is swinging the bat real well right now. Good came today. Back and fourth. Good to see the Cubs win off mistakes when they've lost a few games bymaking mistakes.

Cubs Steal Another One
Cubs Beat Indians 6-5

It was warm and windy at Wrigley Field and Kerry Wood was walking off the field asthe "W" flag was being hoisted.

That would seem to be a normal summer day, except that Wood now pitches for the Cleveland Indians and the Cubs just collected their fourth "walk-off" victory in a week.

In this strangest of summers, the Cubs are winning because of themselves and in spite of themselves.

It has taken them 8 hours and 5 minutes -- plus a 1 hour 26 minute rain delay -- covering 23 innings to beat the Indians twice.
Things like Saturday's 6-5, 13-inning victory suddenly are becoming the norm.

"We make them exciting, but so far we have come out in the win column," manager Lou Piniella said late Saturdayafternoon.

The goat Saturday was Wood because it was his wild pitch that allowed Andres Blanco to spring home with the winning run.

Blanco was a hero for driving home the tying run past a drawn-in infield moments before. So was Kosuke Fukudome, whoscored that run after starting the inning with a single, stole second and went to third on an error. And it was Aaron Miles who got Blanco to third with ahit-and-run single.

"If you look at good teams' records, they do well in one-run ball games," Derrek Lee said. "Winningthese close ones is huge and I think it's going to pay dividends for us coming down the stretch.

"These are wins you have to get because when you lose them they are really demoralizing."

The Cubs are 10-11 in one-run games after wining seven in the last three weeks. They also have put together their first three-game winning streak since May12-14.

Lee has played a huge part in the resurgence. He hit his fourth homer in three games and ran his hitting streak to 17 games.

Blanco, hitting .220 at game's start, also tied Friday's game with an eighth-inning single.

"He's a nice little player," Piniella said. "He needs to learn situational hitting a little more [but] he has a nice glove and he likes toplay."

Saturday's winner was the last of eight Cub pitchers, rookie David Patton (3-1), who gave up a run in the 13th.

It got that far even though the Cubs had the lead going into the seventh inning, thanks to Micah Hoffpauir's two-run homer pinch-hitting for starterTed Lilly.

But the Indians tied it in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk by Carlos Marmol, who inherited a bad situation.

Walks continue to plague Marmol, who is averaging one for every inning compared to less than one every two innings last year.

"He'll be sharp then he'll throw a couple of bad pitches. That will lead to a couple more and instead of stopping it, he's letting it goon," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said.

Perhaps it's a matter of him losing concentration?

"Yeah, a little," Rothschild said. "Aggressiveness has always been something that [makes him good] and he has to get back to that."

Or maybe Marmol just likes to make for exciting finishes.

"It seems like I started yesterday," Lilly said of his six-inning stint. "But I watched the guys continue to fight for 2 1/2 [more] hours."

Alex Gonzalez out 4-6 weeks, just when he was starting to hit the ball a little.

Edwin's coming to Louisville to start getting ready.

Harang has the worst luck.

Well, suddenly it is fun to be a Cubs fan again. I called Milton Bradley a bum when I was down in Houston at a game. I am sure that is what has him motivatedfor this hitting streak!

Derrek is carrying this team right now. He is seeing and hitting so well.

I love/hate the ups and downs of a long baseball season.

Well, at least this one wasn't Kerry's fault.

Glad Wells finally got his first win, he deserves like 5 so far this season.

We keep hanging around, but we need to stay with it until Aramis gets back.

And I'm pretty sure that Pujols is not human. I'm almost positive. One thing though, why in the blue hell do pitchers pitch to him? Do they notwatch sportscenter? ESPNEWS? MLBTV? Don't they know what he can do? I mean, damn. Don't be afraid to throw an intentional ball or 12. Jesus.

Makeup date today, be nice to take this one just cuz.

If I were managing against Albert, I would tell my pitchers to just let the rest of the team try and beat us. Walk Albert every time. No reason to pitch tothis guy. The other guys in that lineup will never have a 2 home run 6 RBI day. Just throw everything outside of the strike zone, really far outside of thestrike zone.

I just realized last night that Albert has 26 HR's......i mean, i hate that team, but the guy is sick!!

@ TLR getting his 2,500 win & Pujols isplaying great. Big series against the Mets, time to start putting some room between us and the rest of the division.
